Bad HDMI cable symptoms

I know that opinion is split on HDMI cable quality and cable lengths etc.

But, what are the likely symptoms of either a Bad/Faulty HDMI cable, or trying to go a metre too far..... Is it fair to say that if you get a picture then all is OK?

Re: Bad HDMI cable symptoms

Hello karlak

Quite different problems.

Faulty cables can mean anything from a bent pin within one of the connector hoods to a bad solder on one of the Nineteen manually soldered terminations at each end of a cable assembly.

Poor quality Cable used in a cable assembly can result in all manner of issues - sometimes resulting in No image (usually a DDC problem), an Intermittent image (usually an HDCP problem) or white 'Sparkles' appearing within an otherwise OK image (usually a Video line problem).

The quality of the Cable can either effect the Video lines or the DDC and HDCP channels within the HDMI signal - differing cable quality problems will induce a different visual/connectivity problem.

Its also good to avoid tight bends when using an HDMI cable as the signal within the Cable can be corrupted by the disturbed signal path its trying to follow.

Within an HDMI signal path the Designers talk about the System Headroom and Margin of Headroom - there is a margin of error allowed within the Source Device, the Cable, the Display Device and any Intermediate Devices (Switch, DA, AV Receiver etc) - if everything within the signal chain is on the edge of being out of Spec then it can add up to Problems that result in the problems outlined above.

Re: Bad HDMI cable symptoms

How about a colour cast problem?

Cut a long story short, my HD65 is showing all sources with a pink/blue tinge. I've bypassed the avr and gone direct from source to pj.

Can a faulty cable give a perfect picture, but one with really bad colour?

Cheers,

Re: Bad HDMI cable symptoms

Hello skipton01

It is feasible for the cable to have one faulty line and not be passing the colour information through properly.

Are you saying its OK with another cable?

Another possibility being that your Sources is Outputting RGB and your AVR or Display is stuck in YCbCr (digital Component) mode - or vice versa.

Worth having a look to see what Menu options/mode your Source, AVR and Display offer/are in.
