HDMI Splitting with differing output resolutions?

Hi,

Wondering if anyone is able to recommend an HDMI splitter that is capable of dealing with 2 devices that have different max resolutions?

Setup will be :

BD player / Sky HD / Xbox 360 etc.
Into an Onkyo 507 receiver

Outputs :

Sony TV - 1080p
Benq PE7700 projector : 720p/1080i max

There's some available in Maplin but there's nothing to indicate if it can deal with 2 displays which have different max resolutions.

I should mention that it's a case of either or display being in use at any one time i.e. if the projector is in use then the TV will be in standby (although I realise under these circumstances the TV will still be advertising it's edid data).

I've tried el cheapo hdmi Y type splitter from eBay, no chance of that working.

Any help is much appreciated as I've got all the parts just need to sort out the connectivity for my first projector

Cheers

Paddy

Youll either need to choose the lowest common resolution for each device (i.e. set the BD to output 720P or 1080i) or change the output resolution depending on which screen you are using.

No splitter would be able to take a 1080P signal and output to a 720P only screen without an expensive scaler/video processer of some sort.

Unless Joe Fernand has a magic box available?

Hi JimBob,

Many thanks for the info. It's a shame but as the projector will only be used for films it won't be too much of an issue to change outputs during the setup process (I use a portable screen and the projector is packed away between viewings).

I do wonder whether there could be some issue here also with the Onkyo 507 being in the mix because when I had both TV (1080p) and projector (1080i/720p) plugged in via a cheap HDMI Y type splitter from eBay, even if I was sending a signal that both were capable of e.g. SKY HD at 1080i, the amp wasn't passing an image onto either device.

Then again without any other device to test with I'll have to assume that the £5 jobbie from eBay was just a pile of garbage

I'd be very glad to hear from anyone who has a similar setup and how they deal with the issue of splitting the HDMI output to 2 devices with have different max resolutions.

Thanks again,

Paddy

Hello both

A Distribution Amp (DA) wont do anything other than communicate with the Source and whatever Sync (Display) devices its connected to - with your proposed system its slightly more complex as you also have the Repeater (AV Amp) in the signal path.

With the combination of Display and Projector indicated the Source will revert to 1080i - as that's the common format.

Where you have a 1080p capable Display (your Projector) I'd run some tests trying 1080i vs. 1080p to see how different the signals look and then decide if you will want to manually toggle the Source between 1080i (default) and 1080p for Projector viewing.

The Onkyo amps can be a bit of a pig to integrate and configure - we keep a TX-SR606 in our HDMI test rig (along with Arcam, Denon, Pioneer and Yamaha) so that we have some hands on experience with the Onkyo units.

You may struggle to manually override the default settings in a Distributed system due to the way your DA handles the EDID data that runs between the Source and the Display's.

If you choose carefully your DA will offer you the ability to try various EDID strategy's so that you can get around the 'default' settings of the Source - the Octava units we supply have Static or Dynamic EDID firmware options available.

Having a DA that can 're-format' your Source sounds good until you look at how poorly implemented video processing can affect your source signals - its something were working on for larger systems but its impossible to do it cheaply and retain image quality.

Joe,

Thank you very much for such a comprehensive response.

Having been in touch with the guys a Neet I've actually today order their 1 x 2 splitter as from my conversation there that it will give the behaviour you describe by defaulting the sources to ouput 1080i which I can live with.

If that doesn't work out I'll surely be coming to you guys for a solution as swapping cables back and forth definately does not appeal

Thanks again,

Paddy
