Hi, I need some advice on sending HDMI over cat5 cables.

I have run 2 cat5 cables trhough my house already, the lengths are approx 20m. I have already tried to install some HDMI - cat5 converters but have had no luck getting the m working. I got cheap ones so am guessing that that might be the problem. Can anyone recommend some decent converters and HDMI leads to make it work for me?

For CAT5e Baluns i would go for Octava HDOCAT-UK HDMI + Optical CAT5 extender with IR Passthru as it includes Optical and IR Passthru.

Or you can go for

Octava HDMI over Ethernet (CAT5/6)

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. Is the site you linked to yours? If so, can you assure me that the baluns and cables will work together? Dont want to be stuck with another set of equipment that I cant use that all

Assuming your CAT5 cables are working (and tested), wired as per the HDMI Extender's you are using require (TIA-568A, TIA-568B or straight through - not all Extenders use the same wiring config!!!) then there is no reason that the Octava HDMICAT-UK or HDOCAT-UK would be the source of a signal failure.

What you do have to consider though is that some combinations of HDMI equipped Source and Sync (Display or AV Amp) simply wont work with an extender (over CAT5 or otherwise) due to firmware shortcomings within the Source or Sync device!

The Octava extenders have proven to be pretty system independent and have worked so far in every system I've tried them in - but there is always a first time with HDMI; that's the nature of the beast.

Hi, thanks for the replies. The cables have been tested and are wired as TIA-568B. This is what was wirtten on the baluns I purchased. The equipne tthat is is working with is 1 sky HD box and a samsunG LCD TV. All I am getting is a bright blue or pink screen. Will go for the ones you recommended and see what happens I guess.

I got a set of HDMI Baluns from the mighty E-bay.....£40 for the pair, I am running cat5 over the loft from Living room to front bedroom (approx 100ft), I had no need for true 1080p so didn't bother with Cat6

These wee cheap Baluns worked an absolute treat, so I'm not sure that your problem would be purely on the basis that you bought cheaper equipment mate.

Dearer isn't always better in some cases
