DVD crash when linking DVI-D to HDMI

I have attempted (unsuccessfully) to play my denon dvd-1910 through its dvi-d port, to a dvi male (18 + 1 pin) to hdmi female converter thence through hdmi cable to onkyo tx sr 875. From there signal goes via hdmi to a jvc hd 350 d-ila projector. The dvd works fine (plays and sound is successfully passed via optical cable to onkyo) until I link up the onkyo to the projector. At that point the dvd freezes (and won't react to anything except removal of the power plug).

If i use an hd source like my hd camcorder via the same hdmi in on the onkyo all works fine.

I have never updated the firmware on the denon or the jvc. The onkyo has latest firmware.

Does anyone have any ideas where I am going wrong?

Cheers

Re: DVD crash when linking DVI-D to HDMI

Possibly an HDCP handshaking issue - the Camcorder won't be generating an HDCP handshake so slightly less problematic that the DVD player.

First step would be to get the Source (DVD player) talking to the Sync (Projector) without the AV Amp in the signal path.

Connect the DVD directly to the Projector - get the Denon splash screen up first before you insert a disc (HDCP only kicks in on the player when you insert a disc) if you can see the Splash screen but then things go wrong when you insert a disc you have an HDCP issue.

Once you know the player can talk direct to the Projector you can try again via the AV Amp - again start off with no disc in the player and stick to SD resolution signals until you get things working (only switch on any up-conversion on the player once you have a working signal).

Re: DVD crash when linking DVI-D to HDMI

Thanks Joe. The DVD works fine when connected directly to the projector, and works fine when connected to the av amp without the projector at the other end. It's only when the three come into contact that things go a bit Pete Tong. I have the DVD set at 480/576 resolution (I was going to use the amp to upconvert anyway). I will connect it all with no disc and see if I get the Denon splashscreen as you suggest. Cheers

Re: DVD crash when linking DVI-D to HDMI

Bug fixing HDMI can be a pain - the worst part being that once you pin down what is wrong you cant always actually 'fix it'.

Make sure you power everything off at the wall when making and breaking connections - tends to help out when things reboot rather than hot swapping.

Re: DVD crash when linking DVI-D to HDMI

Another couple of hours later and we have limited progress. No splash screen appeared and the dvd crashed even without a dvd playing. So I upgraded the dvd's firmware.

After that when playing through the onkyo amp the dvd no longer crashes, the projector is no longer showing "no input" but i just get blank blue screen - no Denon splash screen before putting a dvd in and no dvd picture when playing. I have successfully linked up another pvr/ dvd player which has an hdmi output and played a dvd so it just looks like the combination of all three of the denon, onkyo and jvc doesn't work.

Re: DVD crash when linking DVI-D to HDMI

Sometimes swapping out a piece of kit is the only practical/cost effective solution when you hit this type of problem - now if only we can get installers to understand that option
