using hdmi for picture only - is this possible?

Hi all,

I've been struggling with this problem for a while.

I have a Yamaha 750 amp. This has a number of input and output options but no hdmi at all.

Currently I only have SD sources and SD TV.

I am slowly moving to HD.

Now I am getting a HD projector, and want to avoid having to buy a hdmi amp.

I am aware that hdmi cable carries video and audio.

But, can I get a hdmi switch box and send any HD sources into that (i.e. blu-ray player, media player, sky+ etc.) and then to the PJ by a single hdmi, and still send the audio to the Yamaha amp via it's audio inputs.

Hope the above makes sense. Basically I want to bypass the amp for video hdmi and still use it for the audio. So - my blu-ray player (when I get one) would send the video direct to PJ by hdmi and the sound to my amp by optical cable.

My feeling is this could save me buying a whole new amp????

Thanks

Will I get lip sync problems?

I think my real question is :

can you get a converter which send s the video out one way and the audio out another?

Generally you don't need a converter to do this as most of these devices will offer optical out as well as HDMI.

Splitting the sound from the HDMI is not a trivial task as the HD sound formats cannot be carried over optical so although not impossible it is usually easier to take an optical output to the amp and the HDMI to the TV or projector.
