Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

Just received one of these convertors :

Component Video with Audio to HDMI Converter - HDMI Converter

the idea being to take the Component Out and Stereo Audio from my Meridian 598 Dvd-a player . I need this as I'm hoping to rackmount my equipment in the near future and I'll need to use the single HDMI video feed from the system to my Samsung LE46M Lcd in order to be able to access disc menus on the 598 .

The Samsung keeps returning the message ' mode not supported ' and stutters as it tries to display the players own menu system before eventually giving up .

After rebooting everything , ' mode not supported ' message and no audio either . I reconnected the player directly to the tv and the menu system appears instantly via Component , am I missing a simple step with the convertor perhaps ?

Or is it the tv ? Samsung are useless IMO , I didn't realise ( because at the time I didn't have many HDMI devices ) that only one of the 3 HDMI ports was 24fps capable and they wouldn't do anything about 'flashing' the other 2 ports

Ive tried the different HDMI inputs , no difference .

Any ideas ? Have to solve this before getting rack .

Hi Mark ,

From the unit to the Meridian HD621 HDMI switcher ( which I forgot to mention ) its 1m , and from that to the Samsung 2m . I have tried going direct from the unit to the display and get the same message and I've checked my other HDMI sources via the switcher and all is well with them .

Its very disappointing ,

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

Do you have another HDMI connectable display device at all that you can test the converter with?

Is it the same result on every port, when the converter is connected direct to the TV?

You can contact our customer service department ask@hdcable.co.uk or email me directly for further help you would would prefer.

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

What signal format is the DVD-A outputting?

If the DVD-A has a Composite out try that into the Y (Green) connector on the Converter - you should see a B&W image.

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

Morning !
Thanks for the suggestions . I will try the composite , Joe .That would be fine for disc menu navigation but I don't think I could bear watching dvds again that way ( especially the concert ones I often put on for the great sound quality the player produces )

I have tried other HDMI ports Jamie and I do occasionally see a flash of the ' Boothroyd Stuart Meridian 598 ' intro screen from the player which then judders and disappears completely or leaves a ' grey' screen on the lcd

I've tried looking in the players setup menu . It is set for Component usage ( not S-Video ) and also for Auto ( not Pal or NTSC ) . When I insert a Dvd-A and Press 'Play' using the previous arrangement with the system the mlp 5.1 track starts playing immediately ( no video signal required like with HDMI ).

The only other foible I've come across is that the player uses BNC connectors to which I've previously added standard Component Cables to enable connection with the tv . This works fine on its own direct to the Component inputs but as soon as I introduce the convertor and connect via HDMI .....nothing

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

The Composite will be Interlaced whereas your Component may be outputting Progressive - that may be the issue.

If you can get the Composite to work you can then reset the Component out to Interlaced (assuming that was the problem).

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

Thanks again Joe ,

I don't think that's the problem because my version is the 598DC(omponent) and not the 598DP(rogressive) . I chose the former because I didn't have a progressve capable display at the time of purchase .

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

Jamie ,

Quickly connected SkyHD+ box via Component and it appeared instantly even without any sound connected

So that means that its the output from the 598 that must be causing the problem ???? Or the input on tv not accepting whatever output the player puts out ????

Think I'll need to break out the manual to investigate further

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

Not got any further with this . Its dead as a dodo . Sky passes thru presumably because its HD and that seems to be where the screen has drawn the line .

Jamie , did you receive my e-mail the other day ??

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

I am currently off work until Tuesday using up some outstanding holiday days.

I am at a loss really, it is not a problem that has ever been reported before.

We can deduce that they unit is not defective as your testing has proved that it is working with the Sky box.

The iniquity has been traced confidently to the Meridian.

I think it would be beneficial contacting Meridian about the issue to see what light they can shed on the issue.

What are the resuts when you take the switcher out of the signal path and connect:

Meridian > Component to HDMI Converter > Display

?

Re: Component video + Audio to HDMI problem

Hi Jamie ,

The Meridian player only outputs Pal or Ntsc . I took the 621 switcher out of the loop and went 598 Component Out > Convertor > Samsung Hdmi input and same message ' Mode not supported ' so I'm
leaning towards the tv being the problem.

This will be a major bummer as I wont have access to a very good player's disc menus only its audio output
