HDMI extender: Powered or not?

I have a Sony HT-IS100 system and I'm planning on putting the subwoofer next to my sofa due to space constraints by the telly. However, this means that in order to get everything wired I need to do the following:

INPUTS:
Blu-Ray DVD -> HT-IS100 via 8 metre HDMI cable
Sky+ HD -> HT-IS100 via 8 metre HDMI cable
Mac Mini -> HT-IS100 via 8 metre HDMI cable (using mini-dvi to HDMI adaptor out of the Mac)

OUTPUTS:
HT-IS100 -> 37" Panasonic Viera LCD via 8 metre HDMI cable

I've tested it with the Blu-Ray but it seems the combination of two 8 metre cables is exceeding the transmission length, so the picture doesn't go through. I just get a black screen. It does, however, work if I plug the Blu-Ray to the subwoofer via an 8 metre, and then the subwoofer to the TV via a 2 metre HDMI cable. Unfortunately, the sub-woofer is 8 metres away from the LCD, so I need a total cable run of 16 metres, with the subwoofer in between.

Therefore, I'm guessing I'll need to get an extender and think it's probably best to locate the extender between the HT-IS100 subwoofer and the LCD. So that would look like:

HT-IS100 -> 0.5 - 1.0 metre HDMI cable -> extender -> 8 metre HDMI cable -> LCD

That leaves me with 2 questions:

1) Is this the best way to set everything up?
2) Should I use a powered or un-powered extended? I've seen ads for ones that don't need to be plugged into the mains, but am not sure what's best.

Thanks!
Darren

NB: The 8 metre cables I have are these: Premium HDMI Cables

Re: HDMI extender: Powered or not?

I'd be tempted to put a dual output HDMI switch below the TV with one output going to the TV and the other going to the AV Amp/Sub.

If you choose a Switch with signal EQ you wont have any problems sending the signal over an 8m HDMI cable to the AV Amp/sub - Media Factory - Octava HDDA52-UK, 5x2 dual output HDMI switch

The dual output switch means you wont always have to have the AV Amp/Sub switched on to get audio - this way you have the option with SKY HD to view/Listen on the TV.

For SKY HD (and possibly the Mac) you will also want an 8m Optical cable between SKY and the AV Amp/Sub if you want to hear the 'up to 5.1' DD surround broadcasts from some SKY channels/programmes.

Re: HDMI extender: Powered or not?

I'd be tempted if possible to put all your kit together. So short leads from the sources then 1 single 8m HDMI from them to your screen. That might be a better idea
