HDMI multi-roomHD tv

Hello

New on here, i am currently renovating my new flat and want to make full use of HD Sky and blue ray from my Ps3.

I will have 3 TV's
living room 3 m hdmi cable to tv
kitchen 15 m hdmi cable to tv
bedroom 20 m hdmi cable to tv

I have also run in coaxile for the magic eye system to all 3 tv's

I will have a PS3 and a SKY HD box to connect, looking for some suggestions/options on what could be used for this set-up.

Is it possible to say have a system so one person could play the PS3 in one room and watch sky in another room ect ?

Any help would be great cheers thomas

Re: HDMI multi-roomHD tv

You want a matrix switch, this will have several inputs and also several outputs, with each output being able to show any of the inputs independently.

I'm sure somebody will be along shortly to recommend a specific one.

Hello darkhelmet4444

Will you actually view/play the PS3 in the kitchen and bedroom?

Often we find folk only really need to 'distribute' SKY HD (or similar).

Not tricky to distribute two (or more) sources - just a bit more work involved in terms of managing who controls/selects what.

Re: HDMI multi-roomHD tv

Thanks for the replies

I would like the option to be able to play the ps3 in other rooms thats hoping that the remotes will work over the required distance.

Im basically using an alcove in the living room as the hub of the house and running lines out to other areas of the house.

Will the matrix switch be able to handle the run of 20m or will i need an in-line booster before the 20m run ?

Re: HDMI multi-roomHD tv

Various options in terms of controlling the PS3 remotely - keep in mind the standard controller is Blue Tooth so wont work (without some extra electronics) over your IR magic eye system!

A 4x4 HDMI Matrix will do the job for you and allow for a couple of additional sources.

If you have a 20m run I'd be going over dual CAT6 cables and either add an HDMI/CAT6 Extender pair (Media Factory - Octava HDMICAT-UK, HDMI over CAT5 extender) to one output of an HDMI>HDMI Matrix (Media Factory - Octava HDMX44-UK, 4x4 HDMI Matrix switch) or go with a Matrix that offers HDMI In and HDMI or Dual CAT6 output (Media Factory - Octava HDMX44CAT-UK, 4x4 HDMI CAT6 Matrix switch).

When you want to 'extend' the output of a source, switch or matrix using conventional HDMI cables its best to plan that the longest cable used is 15m and an Active extender (Media Factory - Octava HDE-UK, HDMI cable extender) is installed at 15m then a 5m run on its output to make up the 20m.

Some folk will tell you they get on fine at 20m with long length non amplified cables - I find its always a bit of a gamble.

Re: HDMI multi-roomHD tv

You might be surprised just how far the PS3 controller will work over. I live in a fairly standard 3 bedroom 1930s semi-detached house and the PS3 is in the front room and the controller works in every room in the house. The PS3 can even have 4 controller paired with it so you could have a PS3 controller in every room.

For your needs you could either go with a 4-2 matrix switch and a splitter (This is the route I will be taking and it presumes my zone 2 and 3, i.e my dining room and bedroom will not be needed independently) or go with a 4-4 matrix which are MUCH more expensive

A 4 in 4 out matrix would be the ideal but as I say they are so much more expensive

Re: HDMI multi-roomHD tv

Just wondering if you use a 4 x 2 unit does that mean you need to split the one output to give a feed for the 2 rooms ?

Re: HDMI multi-roomHD tv

Yes either a 4-4 matrix or a 4-2 and a splitter.

I've stuck with RF for my third TV for the moment as although it is HD its only a 19" Samsung screen in the bedroom which is very rarely used. My 2 main zones are lounge and kitchen/dining room

My longer term plan is to split the output to the Dining room and send it upstairs, all my kit is in the lounge which is directly under the bedroom so when we do finally decorate the front room I'll be chasing in a hdmi cable whether I actually initially use it or not.

If you can afford the difference for a 4-4 switch then I'd go for that. I can't

Re: HDMI multi-roomHD tv

You can add a Distribution Amp (Splitter) to one or other (or both) outputs of a 4x2 Matrix - though keep in mind you then lack the flexibility of the Matrix (Any Input to Any Output) as all outputs of the Splitter (1x2, 1x4, 1x8 etc) have to view the Source that is selected on that output of the Matrix.

Re: HDMI multi-roomHD tv

Exactly. In my setup with a 4-2 matrix I have my main room, the lounge. and a 2nd room which is the dining room. I intend to split the dining room feed at some point to provide HD to the bedroom. I only have a 19" Samsung TV/Monitor in the bedroom at the moment so RF from Sky is fine but I may upgrade the TV screen a long time in the future and at that point get the splitter.

So the main zone will be independent and the 2 secondary zones will be linked.

Another facter that means the 4-2 suits me is that as well as the SkyHD through the matrix I also have my Sky+ box connected by Scart to both downstairs TVs and RF to upstairs giving me a bit of extra flexibility.

If the 4-4 matrix had been a modest extra investment I might have gone for it but when 4-4 switches are several orders of magnitude more I couldn't justify the difference.
