I am trying to source a 25 meter full 1080p HDMI lead for use in a Village Hall environment. Max available seems to be 20meter. Is this some sort of technical maximum? Where can I look ?

Should be in the HDMI section.

I wouldn't trust a 20 metre cable. You will need a repeater to keep the signal strong. You could then use it with a 5 and 20m cable.

anything above 15m is most likely going to suffer from connection problems unless it is amplified.

heres an example of an amplified hdmi cable.

you can also buy the extender seperately but then you would need 2 hdmi cables.

i cant vouch for how well they work but one of the guys on this forum is using an extender for 20m without problems after his previous unamplified hdmi cable suffered connection problems.

Hi,

I'm looking for a 10m cable to connect my PC to my LCD TV, I originally thought about getting a standard cable that is category 1 certified as it seems to be the general consensus that over 8m the cables don't perform well enough to get cat 2 certified , however I found this product:

HDMI 1.3c Cable 10m High Speed CAT 2 Sharpview Pro Gold Plated Only £42.99 at TVCables

This cable appears to be category 2 certified, which is great for future proofing, how would I find out if it really is certified?

Has anyone had experience of this cable?
From what I understand, the content isn't yet widely available on current devices to send down the cable to test whether it does what is advertised.

Hello all

HDMI was never designed to go over long distances without using some form of active extender.

Charlest1 - for your application a pair of good quality CAT6 cables plus suitable HDMI over twisted pair extenders will be ideal - Media Factory - Octava HDMICAT-UK, HDMI over CAT5 extender

Asphyxiate - I'm not aware of any non amplified cables over 8m that are CAT2 certified.

With current source/display technology there are plenty of 10m CAT1 cables that will be perfect for your application.

Some suppliers can give you both options - Media Factory - Bettercables HIgh Speed CAT2 HDMI cables, 1m to 12m..

If I buy a decent quality cable from a good supplier will it work fine?

ie. Premium Plus 18.5 Metres HDMI Cable

This is cheap imo if it works!

I hear a lot of people saying there will be problems over 10m or 15m, but surely good suppliers such as this wouldn't be able to sell them if there was problems surely...

Any advice appreciated.

A lot depends on the the equipment you are using and the signal you are sending.

If you are using SkyHD which can only send 1080i max then it will demand a lot less of a cable than if you are trying to send 1080p.

Best anyone can say is try it and see.

The Techlink HDMI cables work at 1080i up to 50m, I tested them myself on one of our Sky HD boxes, they are a bit pricey though, the 30m is over £200.

A Cat 5/6 extender is much cheaper:-

And 30m network cables:-

30m Ethernet Cable - CAT6 Network Cable UTP Only £15.18 at TVCables

Thanks Andy. I was originally thinking along the Cat5/6 extender route as I already have some Cat6 cable.

However, so that I only have one cable and therefore one connection to the PJ, I need a 4x2 switch box (so I can output to the TV as well and input Virgin or Sky as well as the other things), some people have said that these don't work well or sometimes don't work at all with Cat5/6 extenders. Is this true or false in your experience with that extender you suggest?

Also can you recommend a hdmi 4x2 switch box please?

Oh and I assume some standard quality HDMI cables from the extenders will be fine right?

When the folk who design and own the HDMI standard cant define what should and shouldn't work in terms of delivering a signal over longer lengths of cable its nigh on impossible for anyone else to make 100% predictions about any HDMI products.

A cable is just one component in an interactive signal path - depending on the quality of the source device, the video format its outputting and the version compliance you can find 'long length' cables that will work in some but not all systems!
