Digital Optical Audio Cables Problem

I have connected my SKY+HD and my PS3 to my old Jamo DVD Surround Sound System using digital optical audio cables and a 3 way splitter. This works fine for the PS3 but when watching SKY i get an intermittent break up of sound for about 1 second.

What is wrong? Do i need to invest in better more expensive cables? Or is it the splitter. It is one of those grey plastic ones that are sold everywhere online. I can't find any other options - do they exist?

Andy

Re: Digital Optical Audio Cables Problem

You should be using a switch not a splitter.

Sometimes you can get a splitter to work connected the wrong way around but it can be prone to problems if any of the other devices send a signal when not in use as it will interfere with the one you are listening to.

Re: Digital Optical Audio Cables Problem

Swap the Sky and PS3 cables around on the switch and see if the problem moves with the cable or stays with the port.

Re: Digital Optical Audio Cables Problem

Most likely the Optical switch - the unit you describe can be pretty woeful.

You may find simply rearranging what source plugs where on the switch will deliver a better result!

Unfortunately a decent Optical switch is around 200.00 GBP (Audio Authority® - Product Details: 1177A) or use an HDMI + Optical switch (Media Factory - Octava HDS4A-UK, HDMI + Digital audio switch).

Re: Digital Optical Audio Cables Problem

Hi.

I have an optical cable problem. Hopefully someone can help.

I have a PS3 and an Xbox. I have a surround sound amp that has 2 optical inputs.

I also have a pair of sharkoon surround sound headphones that have 1 optical input.

I was hoping to be able to connect an optical cable to my console then connect an optical splitter to this. I then split the signal so that one cable went to my amp and the other cable went to a 3 way switch which then goes into my sharkoon headphones. That way I could listen through the surround sound during the day and at night to avoid waking anybody I could use the headphones.

Connecting the optical cable to the console, splitting the signal once was successful but then connecting the switch to the split signal means there is no sound coming through my headphones. I can see the red light coming out of the switch and I know it works because I have connected it separately.

I have attached (a really bad!) photo so hopefully it explains it.

Is there such a thing as signal degradation with optical signals. Is there anyway I can get around this without having to spend hundreds of pounds? Maybe I could buy a booster. I have seen something like these. Do they work AU-D12 - Digital Optical Splitter Audio

Any help would be great
