20m HDMI Active cable or CAT6 solution?

I've searched thse forums for people's views on HDMI solutions over 20m. But most views are now over 6 months old.

What are poeple's thoughts currently? Is CAT5/6 still the best way to go at 20m or are active cables (like Chord's Active silver plus) now acceptable.

One reviewer said active cables can suffer HDCP handshake problems is this still the case?

Thanks in advance.

I want a 20m HDMI 1.3 compilant cable (Ie. deep colour 48 bits) BTW

Hello johnyh,
Laws of physics still havent changed as yet. There is talk in the market of new EQ chips for the HDMI Cable, i am still waiting on for my sample.
We would only recommend Ethernet Baluns Octava HDOCAT-UK HDMI + Optical CAT5 extender with IR Passthru, The Octava unit comes with a IR Pass through so thats always a ++

Thanks HDMIHead,

I've remeasured and I think I can get away with a 15m cable. Am I back in the realm of a cable? Or is 15m still pushing it for 1080p 1.3c support?

I have used the Chord Active Silver Plus cables at 15m and 20m lengths with no problems whatsoever.

Given that Chord themselves, who are quite a reputable brand, make the older Silver Plus cables in lengths of 30m and 40m it would be disconcerting if the shorter 15m and 20m lengths of the newer Active Silver Plus cables didn't work reliably.

Re: 20m HDMI Active cable or CAT6 solution?

I agree Crustyloafer it would be odd if they didn't.

I'm just checking all bases. This buying of a long hdmi cable is proving to be more stressful choosing the projector as there seems to be such a wide choice and equally large price range. £50-£300 quid.

As the cable is going to be in-ceiling I'm just checking and rechecking my facts. (I will of course check it works before installing it!)

Thanks for you help.

Hello Crustyloafer,
This year at the Cedia Expo we had a PS3 + 50m + hdmi extender + 10m + wireless hdmi + octava splitter + 2m hdmi cables displaying 1080p on the screens. We even have 45~50m hdmi cables nothing complicated inserting a EQ chip in the hdmi connector, but we dont recommend this as it will lead to more problems then solutions.

Our Ivuna Advanced High Speed 15m HDMI Cable will do the job fine.

Re: 20m HDMI Active cable or CAT6 solution?

On runs over 15m the 'over twisted' pair option means you can say the cable/extension has been rated for 1080p60, has 1.3 feature set compatibility etc - you cant say the same for the 'active' cables (over 12m) as they can only be rated as a CAT1 cable assembly.

Another advantage of the 'over twisted' pair solution being that with a tested pair of CAT6 cables in place you have many options to test/evaluate in terms of the Extender pairs without having to 'replace' the long cables - not so with an 'installed' Amplified cable!

BetterCables have been delivering a 'silver' HDMI cable solution (I wonder who came up with that idea ) for approx. four years now up to 15m with no problems.

I'd be wary of the longer length 'amplified' solutions - they are fine with 1080i but can be a problem with 1080p!

Media Factory - Bettercables HIgh Speed CAT2 HDMI cables, 1m to 12m.

Joe
