I was so impressed with it (again) that I had a glance at IMDB and was taken aback to read that despite the info.at the start of the film,it isn't a true story.However a couple of murders in that area (Minnesota/N.Dakota) at that time did bear a strong resemblence to the film in parts. Btw the strong(and strange)accents are due to a very large Scandinavian population,especially Norwegian. Frances McDormand won best actress in the Academy awards (1997) as did the Coen Bros. for Screenplay

I found out about that during an interview with the Coens a few years ago.
