All This HD On HD Channels

I know this might very silly but how do they broadcast the HD stuff like Kill Bill or Gladiator when the HD-DVD isnt out yet for example

Would they be as good as HD-DVD if it was out

saw a bit of Kill Bill and quality was ace but how would it compare if i saw it on the actual HD-DVD

AFAIK Sky is broadcast in 720 But agood TV will upscale to 1080i

A HDDVD is 1080p ,would you notice the differance...abit ,but you do get the full sound options with a disc and the extras

anything shot in 35mm will be HD ready

Re: All This HD On HD Channels

Channels such as BBC-HD usually get a copy of the movies in HD directly from the distributor/studio, but the broadcast bitrate can be variable. The quality compared to BluRay or HD-DVD will largely depend on your display device, but if you are watching on a projector or really big plasma then the HD-DVD/BluRay will be better as you will probably be watching in 1080 at full bitrate.

Re: All This HD On HD Channels

I watched "girl with a pear earing" last night, recorded from BBC HD and the video quality wasn't great. The picture was very grainy, albeit at least the audio was in DD5.1. Im getting more fussy now, having watch various HD DVDs.

Re: All This HD On HD Channels

Both Kill Bill movies were absolutley superb on BBC as was Solaris & Gladiator on C4HD.However last nights Primal fear C4HD was pretty poor and Alien Resurection was below par also.

It does seem a little hit and miss with some of the films that are being shown at the moment, hopefully C4HD will get their act together sooner rather than later.

A few DVD reviews mention the grain as well, probably a directorial choice and with HD that tends to be more evident than the softer DVD or SD broadcast.

I think there more HD you do watch the more fussy you become

Re: All This HD On HD Channels

Guys, if i download a tv programme that was broadcast in High Def to my pc, stick it on USB key, connect that to an upscaling dvd player (with USB connection, like the Pioneer DV-600) and watch it via HDMi on a High Def TV, will i be watching it in High Def (like the original broadcast) or upscaled ?

Re: All This HD On HD Channels

Upscale i think, it depends if the DVD player can cope with HD file formats.

If you downloaded the Divx/XVid file then I suspect it will be SD. Why not check the resolution of the video? If your file is a TV episode and it's around 350mb in size, it's SD. The HD versions of TV shows tend to be 1GB+.

So to answer your question it will be upscaled, probably by both your DVD player and your TV. My advice would be to just let one of the devices upscale rather than both.

I thought Alien Resurrection looked pretty good (apart from some cut-outs in tbe broadcast that I experienced). It was much better than the SD DVD.

Re: All This HD On HD Channels

Kill Bill & Gladiator are available in 1080p rips if you know where to look. I had to DL Gladiator when my Sky box crashed during the TV recording.

Re: All This HD On HD Channels

Heroes Broadcasting on BBC HD at 1080i looked near enough the same as the HD-DVD Boxset...
