Does the BBC never show Forumula 1 in HD ?

Ive had a look at the BBC listings and ive not seen anything for Forumla 1 in HD, as far as i`m aware they didn`t have the qualifying in HD and it doesn`t look as though the race today will be in HD. Has this been the norm in the past as ive only just had HD installed so i`m not familiar with what sport the BBC broadcast in HD, F1 would look great in HD.

While i`m here, what is considered the best HD channel for quality ?

Re: Does the BBC never show Forumula 1 in HD ?

I'm afraid F1 is not produced in HD.

It might be in the future, but as long as the original production is in SD it will not be available on BBC HD.

For HD quality, go to Sky Sports. This is where I notice the difference between SD and HD best

Its a pitty that the BBC don`t show F1 in HD, its strange really as F1 is their showcase programme where they outbid ITV for it, you would think that they would do everything possible to make it the best experience seeing as its the best live programme they have to offer.

its not the bbc's cameras at the track, if they're not in hd there's not much they can do!

Re: Does the BBC never show Forumula 1 in HD ?

The BBC, along with most other broadcasters, take the world feed. This is produced by the FIA/FOM, so the Beeb have no control over it. I'm sure they would like to have an HD version, though having seen what they've done to The HD Channel lately, it's probably no so important now.

Re: Does the BBC never show Forumula 1 in HD ?

As others have said, it is not the BBC which films the F1 races which is why they are not yet in HD.

With regard to the best channel for HD, ironically the best is the BBC HD channel!

Re: Does the BBC never show Forumula 1 in HD ?

If we are lucky we might get the Japanese GP in HD, as that is filmed by Fuji TV, and not FOM

Fuji have filmed it in HD before, whether they will this year, and if the BBC buy (or are allowed to buy) access to this feed we will just have to wait and see.

Re: Does the BBC never show Forumula 1 in HD ?

There has been a rumour that FOM will try and supply HD feed at as many as possible F1 races next year as they can. They basically outsource the OB to a local broadcaster who supply camera and people to FIA/FOM for the day as they hold the rights.

For example the GB grand pricks will be covered by the Beeb in 2010 and this certainly should be available in HD.

However....I'm not sure if all the feeds will be available in HD as some stuff like in car shots etc. might not be able to be produced small/light enough to include in the cars with a sufficent quality so it could be a mix of HD and SD stuff.

It should be in HD. It's not as if there isn't enough money in the sport.

I don't think so mate! FOM use their own facilities everywhere except Monaco and Japan. It's a huge operation with plenty of their own staff and equipment. It has no other purpose than F1 and GP2.

But it's not going to be sport that's paying for it, but the BBC, and utimately the viewer via the TV licence fee. I suspect that F1 already costs more than is justified by its relatively small audience (3 or 4 million for the Grand Prix). It wouldn't surprise me if the Beeb got rid of F1 as soon as they contractually can.

If what GaryB says is true then it isn't the BBC that fund the feed..but the FIA/FOM.

So it wouldn't be any more real cost to the BBC at all.
