Channel 4 beats Sky TV to 3D TV

My mate works for Sky and they got shown the 3D tv not so long ago, he was pretty impressed with it. Just out of mild interest, if you're supposed to wear the red/blue glasses does this not affect everything you watch in the sense that films, although 3D, are just in effect red and blue?

Channel 4 will be using Colorcode, Yellow/Blue lenses not red/blue. Both forms are anaglyph though and the colours act as filters, blocking and allowing various light in to get the 3D effect...that's how I understand it. Of course, with this method, the natural colours are affected and because the eyes are doing different things, eyestrain and/or headaches are the result.

Sky have the right idea with regards the 3D. You have to hand it to them, if they introduce something new, they at least try and do it to the best that technology will allow them. Polarized glasses or Shutter Glasses are the way to go...only downside....you might need to buy a new TV. There may be ways around that though, depending on how their 3D is broadcast....only time will tell.

3D systems in Digital Screen cinemas use polarized light systems. The occasional release of a 3D Movie to DVD has reverted back to the coloured lens system which has been around since the dawn of cinema time. It results in poor colours and headaches for a lot of people. Of course sport events will be the main attraction for a real 3D presentation but new equipment is needed in production and in the home. I've seen a few 3D movies, IMAX and ordinary cinema, and after a while they become a bit tiresome to watch. This technology in whatever form seems to be dragged out every 10 years by the cinema industry to combate home entertainment. I suspect at the present time they are wary of 'Home Cinema' set-ups.

Lets be honest the big consumer electronic companies faced with the collapse of the price of flat panels and corresponding slashing of the profit margins are desperate to start a new product cycle.
The idea to get people buying new 3D displays riding off the back of the hype surrounding 3d in cinemas and offer a year or two of premium pricing is very tempting. It helps of course as many global corporations have their finger in both the media and manufacturing camps where they can feed off eachother.

Yes, the electric companies have been doing this for as far back as we can remember though. Buying into new technology and improved systems is what we Home Theatre Enthusiasts are here for aren't we Starburst?

I just think 3D really splits people down the middle, which is fine, but I just wish some people would make a judgement after they have seen proper 3D ...e.g. in a RealD cinema or with shutter glasses on an appropriate 3D TV or Projector. The anaglyph releases of 3D movies, really are scraping the bottom of the barrel and the bare minimum of what can be called 3D. It's cheap 3D for the masses to be honest. Obviously, the studios have a vested interest in not releasing top quality 3D DVD releases of their films as of course, they want people to go to the cinema first rather than wait for the DVD, Also, currently, there aren't enough 3D systems to justify proper 3D releases on DVD..e.g. side by side or interlaced 3D format.

What confuses me is that surely the studios make just as much money from DVD/Blu Ray releases than they make from the cinema these days? After all, it wasn't too long ago that Videos/DVD etc weren't even available to view in the home. Some compromise has to be made between the Cinema audience and the Home Theatre Enthusiast surely?

Personally, with regards to 3D, I would like to see reasonably priced 3D DVD releases in the side by side/field sequential format for those people who have the facility to view 3D properly at home and just let the masses have the anaglyph versions...

The thread title is rather unfair.

There have been 3 D things shown on TV for years so in that sense everybody beat Sky and most of them beat Channel 4.

Virgin had Chuck in 3 D in August.

Channel 4 are just doing more of the same.

Sky are launching a proper 3 D TV channel.

So in truth Channel 4 are not beating them at all.
