Re: EP35 Region Free Firmware.

Thanks a lot to kingfats for this post.

Can someone please confirm that Toshiba still support firmware updates via the ethernet port on the machine. Not talking about new updates, just reinstalling the existing latest one.

This gives me more comfort that if i mess it all up i can just plug the cat 5 cable in the back and press a few buttons (even a clutz like me can do that).

cheers

They did a couple of weeks ago. I installed the region free hack and then updated to V4 via ethernet.

Re: EP35 Region Free Firmware.

Another update on the EP30 regionfree testing.

By accident I managed to convert my region locked EP30 into a region free EP35.

I was tinkering around with the EP35 regionfree firmware, and then I got error message 10004050 while doing a firmware update. It was stuck there and I had to unplug it. When I started up there was nothing shown on the TV so I was sure I had bricked the player. But then I noticed that the display on the player itself looked normal, so I upgraded the firmware again with the original EP35 regionfree firmware. And to my amazement it now said it was an EP35 and it was regionfree.

I have tested RC1 DVD, RC2 DVD and HD DVD. They all work great.

I will try to look into what part of the tinkering made it into an EP35, and post any solution I might find. The only bad thing is that it is now regionfree, so it's not easy to run tests on it.

I'm not sure if I should try to make it into an EP30 again or if I should leave it as an EP35. I have all the sound options for the EP35 in the setup menu, but I guess that there must be some hardware differences between the EP30 and EP35. Is there any way I can test if the EP35 sound capabilities work on my EP30?

Hi mate.
Not really mate firmware won't/can't alter the EP30's audio capabilities as there hardware related.
All the best mate and good luck with your research.

I suppose you are correct, but as my player now thinks that it is an EP35 I got all the EP35 sound settings in the menu. It would be nice to test it. If I for instance turn "Digital Direct Audio Mode" on, is there a way I can check if it is working or not?

To test that you would have to connect to a HDMI 1.3 amp and see if TrueHD lights up on the amp.
But it won't.

You do have a CD-Writer or a DVD-Writer connected, right? Hehe, I know it's a silly question.

Try your ordinary burning software and burn at the lowest speed possible.

I have a CD re-writer connected to my laptop, but i's not a silly question as i am concenred that it is not working properly. i tried using Roxio at its lowest speed (4x), but when i put the cd in the EP35 it just said loading for 20 mins and turned off. It didnt perform the update.

My only option is to try to use imgburn at home as i think that it just doesnt like my work set up.

thanks

Re: EP35 Region Free Firmware.

Tried this at home and at least the imgburn software worked properly (which it didn't at work). Couldnt get the update to work on the EP35, then i read the original instructions...

.....So it turns out there's a difference between bruning a file and burning an image to a cd

Once i did it properly, the update worked just as described in the various posts

It has to be noted that he used the 'dirty EP35 firmware' from the EP30 Region Free thread, not the EP35 regionfree firmware you find linked in this thread.

You know that the RCE hack is only necessary if you want to play a RCE encoded disc, right?

And the full hack is T.search, 1, 3, 9, 1, T.search

Talking Re: EP35 Region Free Firmware.

Hello KigFats and Viking61.. (and also Mean Doris!!)

Many thanks for the info on Upgrading the firmware and Region Codes in particular for the Tosh EP35. I have been on the lookout for this RCE hack for a long time. There was that bloke who apparently used to work for Toshiba who had the codes but got very "Dog in the Manger" about it and tried to sell it for £20 a throw, but wanted 200 takers before he would release it! I believe he was also thrown out of this forum for bad behaviour!! He re-appeared on a Australian Forum and was still whingeing about his treatment...
Anyway never mind him..just wanted to offer you all sincere thanks for helping on this issue.. and for making it so simple to proceed with the updates.
I have some observations I would like to pass on for other "Updaters" which are not quite in line with your own instructions: It might assist others if they have slightly different versions of this player. I should make the point that my own player came from Germany and was updated on firmware only as far as V2..as per the official Toshiba Update disc.

I found during the installation process that:

1. Having opened the tray and placed the disc in, Pushing "T-Search" didn't do anything; neither did pushing the numbers 1,3 or 9 followed by "1" and when I further pressed T-Search, once more nothing happened!
2.I started again from scratch, shut down and then having placed the disc in the tray, closed it, at this point.
3. The LCD display then came up with "VERUP". I let it sit there for a while, not being quite sure what to do, but then when nothing had seemed to happen, I pressed the "OK" button.. there was a brief flicker of something in the display then it went to display ,in sequence " 1/4;2/4;3/4;4/4..where it sat for absolutely ages. I had read and printed out the advice from "MeanDoris"..linked by your "headsup" HTML...and noted that he said things took a long time. So I left it running.. and Bingo the process completed in time ,spat the disc out and shut itself down.
4.I then left the disc in as suggested by MeanDoris, and restarted it via the handset. MeanDoris was correct.. there was a further brief "update" of some kind and "1/2" appeared, followed by "2" and "2/2". By this stage I had no idea what to expect!
5. But as Doris said.. "Robert was your mother's brother! and it played all regions without hesitation, first time out!
6. I followed this up with an installation of Firmware V4..obtained easily from your link, Fats!! All quite straightforward as the "imgburn" programme presented itself without delay. (I had installed that on a previous occasion).

7. So all in all a successful 45 minutes attending to all this and so am now a very Happy Uncle Grumpy !! Thank you to all concerned!

Best wishes to all hackers, Anoracks and enthusiasts!

BoeingMan (Aka Unk Grumps !)

Re: EP35 Region Free Firmware.

Glad that you made it BoeingMan.

The RCE hack (T.search, 1, 3, 9, 1, T.search) is not a part of the regionfree firmware installation as such. If you after having made your player regionfree want to play a disc that is encoded with RCE, then you will need the hack.

Red face Re: EP35 Region Free Firmware.

Hello again Viking61! Thanks for the prompt reply.. Obviously I had misunderstood the implications of T-Search 139 etc. As I understand it now, the multi-region code is now on-board, as a result of installation;but for "normal" everyday use, if a disc has an RCE flag/label whatever, then you have to proceed via the button sequence TSearch 1 3 9, 1 T search, for it to play. Correct?

I see that I might not be the only one to misinterpret these instructions.

Anyway thanks for the clarification.. just need to try it out now.. the discs I selected for a quick regional tests evidently didn't have the RCE restriction on them.

Thanks again..

BoeingMan
