The firmware is built on the EP35 version 1.3, but can be applied onto all versions, including 4.0. Re-apply version 4.0 after making it region free.
Viking61 I have an HD-A35 in the USA and I only want to make it region free so I can view NTSC discs from other regions. Can you let me know the best way to do this. My machine code is HDA35KTU Let me know if you need any other information. Thanks in advance.

You can make it into a region free EP35. It can still play NTSC discs, but it will have PAL as default output. So if your TV or projector does not support PAL, you won't see anything on the screen until you put in a NTSC or HD DVD disc. Some people who have done this hack recommend always leaving a NTSC disc in the drive. That way it will change to NTSC output at startup.

If you go for the EP35 solution, you need to use the dirty EP35 firmware files. You can't use the regular region free firmware for EP35.

Having had an EP30 for a couple of years now I have only just bought an AV amp to run it through. After locating a TrueHD disk I found my shiny new amp was not showing any of those funky new symbols .
From what I have read I guess this is becuase
a) the firmware is way behind (i.e. factory standard)
b) it's through HDMI - I may try it with a optical cable later but the idea was to have less cabling!
So my question is this:
can i just connect it to the internet to update the firmware or am I way out of luck?
And if i do update the firmware (to EP35) will it actually allow bitstream audio of the new formats to the amp? (My only worry is "bricking" it as I'm sure the warranty is way out of date...)

For your new amp to show those funky symbols, I think you have to bitstream the audio. You need an EP35 or XE1 to bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. The EP30 will not (even with the EP35 firmware) bitstream the lossless codecs.

And if I understand the other posts, I cannot send a bitstream output through optical as it doesn't have the bandwidth? I do have one other HD-DVD drive but it's plumbed into a launch XBOX 360 (no HDMI ). ah well..it was worth a try.

Setting the player to output PCM will enable you to hear the HD audio tracks, it will sound no different from if you were bitstreaming on a higher end player.

Apart from DTS-MA which the EP30 doesnt support at all.

Haven't updated my ep35 firmware to 4.0 yet. On 3.0 at the moment. Was watching Transformers last night and could see the dreaded jaggies. Does 4.0 fix this? I can't find it anywhere for download.

Would anyone be kind enough to send me a link to the 4.0 firmware and the region free hack?

Thanks

Edit: Found this link http://www.mediafire.com/HDDVD

There are two EP35 "dirty" files along with the 4.0 firmware. Do both ISO files need to be burned to one CD? Not sure how to proceed with the region free hack.

It's better to use this one:
HD-EP35 Ver1.3 regionfree.iso - Windows Live

Then update to version 4.0 afterwards.

For the EP30 you will have to use the Dirty1 and Dirty2 isos. One CD for each iso file. You will find them on the link you mentioned before.

But be careful to follow the instructions to the letter if you use the dirty method.

Folks

I installed the region free hack as posted several months ago on this thread (i think by kingfats). If i now update the unit using the internet link, is the region free status wiped ?

It should still be regionfree after a firmware upgrade.
