Question Toshiba HD-E1 Audio * Help *

Hi all I am completely new to all of this so please be gentle with me, I have an interesting question which I would much appreciate some help with.

I have just ordered a Toshiba HD-E1 to go with my panny TH42px60.

I am gonna connect the E1 straight to the panny via HDMI, what I need to know is does the HDMI lead carry audio ??

Also, I have been looking to compliment my (budget) system with a (budget) Home Cinema package. I have taken a liking to the Sony HT-SS500 not only because of the price (£118) but the fact that it has a few good reviews.

I have noted on the back of the Sony HT-SS500 it has Digital audio in via "Optical - SACD/CD input" and "Coaxial - DVD input", the E1 only has an Optical output, so basically can I connect the Optical output from the E1 straight into the SACD/CD optical connection ? can that input be used for DVD ? or would it have to be the stated DVD connection ?

If so would a Optical - Coaxial convertor be a good solution ?

Thanks for your help in advance guys

Hi

Welcome to the forums. I am sure you will find them very helpful.

To answer your question, when connecting by HDMI you only get the audio if you connect it to a compatible amplifier which can decode the sounds. If as you say you don't currently have an amp then you will have to connect it via 2 channel audio to your TV or using the optical connection when you get your amp.

I am not 100% but I think an optical/coaxial convertor will be fine.

Thanks Greg for your immediate response

So I take it from your reply it is a definite no no, connecting the Optical out of the E1 to the Optical input (SACD/CD) of the Sony ?? do they not basically do the same thing ?? DVD/CD inputs ??

I have looked around on the forum and have read of someone using the convertor saying it was working perfectly, this looks like the route I will be taking.

I'm about 99% sure that it would be fine to connect the optical out from the E1 into the optical input of the Sony unit. If you're buying it in the shops then ask the sales person to confirm e.g. by hooking up a dvd player to it or if buying online ask the seller for an email confirmation before buying.

Thanks MI55ION.

I will buy the Sony HTS with an optical lead and try it myself, if it does not work a convertor and coax lead will be needed.

Thanks again Greg for your help
