How do you know which are the rare films?

I just wondered what defines a rare HD DVD?

I've recently bought a load and a few of the ones were listed as rare - is there a site somewhere that lists which the rarer titles are and what they're worth or is it just a case of going off the guidelines on here for everything?

I'm guessing some sellers just list a title as rare because it's on HD DVD?

The above is a joke right? Shawshank wasn't released on HD, even though it was on a flyer once?

It's even rarer than I thought then? No wonder I couldn't buy it I see it continuously on the advertising supplied with a lot of the HD DVDs but didn't realise that it wasn't released.

Re: How do you know which are the rare films?

any of the japanese releases of mainstream american / european movies would be classed as rare and expensive ! If you look at the classifieds, I would say that the market for these are slowing abit now as you see less and less being sold and the 'rare' ones certainly dont go for the money they did a year or so back. A mention of Jack ryan would be rare as it was a very limited run because of paramount making a mistake on the actual release..ie no extras ! Also I recall a few copies of the bee movie are out there ( a rumour of course ) as it was due for release before paramount pulled the plug on the format.

can you list them here and we'll tell you which are really rare.

Only UK release I think is rare is shadow of moon, quite a few french, gemran, spanish, polish and japanese releases could be considered rare - in the UK anyway.

I saw this on Ebay about two weeks ago and I'm sure it was over £100 This was a buy it now though but still pretty dam expensive considering the BR alternative is what.... £25-30 tops?
Edit infact I just checked play.com they have the LE collectors edition for £17.99.

A set finished on eBay for £216 last week, and I think that's a fairly good estimate on what people would expect to pay.

I understand the price of the Blu-Ray equivalent (I have it on my own shelf), but then the same comparison is there for many titles - the Japanese release of Reign of Fire, the German releases of the Resident Evil movies for instance - and ultimately that isn't essentially the point as for the collectors out there a set of BoB in your HD collection would certainly be a highlight and therefore one worth paying for.

won a recent fleaBay auction for the BoB HD DVD set (for a slightly ungodly sum ), and the seller tossed in a copy of Mr. & Mrs. Smith as a bonus.

the price you/i pay for not being proactive in the infancy of HD DVD; releases like BoB, and Out of Time were right there to be had on Amazon-Japan. oh well.
