Toshiba HD-E1, Won't Upscale DVD's, Prohibited

Hi, my Toshiba E1 doesn't allow upscaling of standard dvd's about 80% of the time, i always get a warning something like, "High Resolution Output is Prohibited for this Content, Resolution Changed to 576p" it then changes my resolution to 576p from 1080i, which makes quite a difference.

I watched star wars revenge of the sith last night and it gave the warning and scaled down the resolution to 576p, but when i just played it i got no warning and it played at 1080i, if i change my channel and then back again i get the warning pop up and the resolution is changed, is this normal, any reason for this or a way to bypass it.

It does it about 80% of the time with all my standard dvd's, the difference between 576i and 1080i is noticable, any recomendations for a good upscaling dvd player by the way, many thanks.

Are you using Component or HDMI? If you use component, the player won't do upscaling on most discs because of some copy protection thingy.

Thanks for the reply, I'm using HDMI, I've been googling away and found out a lot of people have this problem, it's to do with HDCP according to most people. The only thing is most other people using Toshiba's after receiving this warning still get 1080i or 1080p when they check there display setting on there tv's and hd dvd players, mine actually outputs 576p.

If i go into settings and change from 1080i to 720p and back to 1080i, i still get the warning but when i check the display i'm getting 1080i from both tv and hd dvd player, it's just a pain to do this everytime i play a normal dvd.

It can happen when i first turn the player on or change to a channel using anthor HDMI connection and back again, so it's HDCP related.

Well i may have found a solution, i must always select the HDMI channel for my hd dvd player before turning it on, it's worked so far. If i don't change the channel or turn the player on before selecting the correct channel it seems to be ok, so far I've got no warnings, but time will tell and some more testing, thanks.

Yes, you are right. For the HD DVD player to get a correct handshake with the TV at startup, the TV needs to be on the input that is used by the HD DVD player.
