Should I update my firmware?

I have an Toshiba EP30 on firmware 1.1, it seems to function OK, is there any advantage to update to 4.0 firmware, are there any known bugs or difficulties with 4.0 I should be aware of?

Thanks

I would recomend doing it via cd if you do, i bricked my player when doing it over the internet as something timed out and the player now does nothing but say welcome when you turn it on. i do now have a machine for spares

Send it back to Tosh for a replacement, I'm sure they will change it over. To the OP, one advantage of updating is making it region free for normal dvds. And yes I would also update via cd as I too bricked my EP35 but I got a replacement.

Re: Should I update my firmware?

I don't have an EP35 but an XA1.

I updated the firmware to 4 (via CD ).

The main reason I did was to ensure compatability with all HD-DVDs.
As I understood it, there were playback issues with some of the later HD-DVDs issued. The firmware update (for me) was to ensure that I don't run around later updating firmware because a disc I just got was freezing etc

I think it is a pretty safe upgrade in that I doubt it will have introduced new bugs and almost definitely will have fixed some.

Large consumer electronics companies don't usually mess around with their devices as opposed to software developers or newer computer oriented companies

There are some discs such as Stalingrad that will not play on the EP30/35 even if you upgrade the firmware hence why I ended up buying a XE1.

You can get firmware 4.0 from a link on this site that has the region free part built in. I have done EP30/EP35 XE1 models and all work fine.

Re: Should I update my firmware?

Thanks for the info, I did get a disk from Toshiba a while ago, put was sort of put off after I updated a previous EP30 with I think was the 1.3 firmware which screwed it up, this current machine was a replacement from Toshiba (can't fault the service) which came with 1.1 which I have left alone thus far.

Just one further question on some SD DVD's (usually the music ones) it shows in letterbox style on the EP30 But on an upscaling standard DVD/HDD machine it plays full screen, does the 4.0 sort this out at all?
