Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

Hi all, thinking of selling my HD DVD player and discs and wondering whether it is actually worth it or not.

It's HD-XA1 US HD DVD player so outputs at 1080i, also got a Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on. I have 48 HD DVD's as well.

So is it worth it and if so how much should I be looking for for it?

Re: Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

Personally I'd hold onto them

But what would make it worth it to you? I can't see how anyone can tell you if it's worthwhile or not...

'Worth' is something very subjective, personal, but if you are looking to put an approximate price, then an XA1 recently sold for about £50.00 on that auction site (another one asking £80.00 went unsold). The 48 HD DVDs, depending upon which ones you have of course, maybe only around 40-50 pounds, if they are the usual suspects. (They are going for as low as 48p each at some gamestations).

So there maybe more 'value' in what you have than the price you will get

Best

Re: Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

I suppose I meant more along the lines of "is anyone going to actually want to buy it?" rather than is it worth it to me.

if I could get a couple of hundred for the lot to put toward replacing some of the HD DVDs with BRs i think i'd be quite happy?

No harm in putting it up for sale in the classifieds here and see what response you get. I have a feeling that willingness to split may get more responses

Re: Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

Perhaps someone that already has an HD-DVD player could look at some of your discs. I would expect to get 40£-70£ for everything. I think even 100£ is too much unless someone really wants some of your discs.

If you really want to sell them why don't you set an asking price here and see whether you get any response?

Unfortunately, I think £200 is maybe a bit optimistic, unless you have some very sought-after discs.

I have a similar collection, and had a similar dilemma, but when I worked out how much it'd cost me to replace them on BD, it just wasn't worth it. It would be a couple of hundred pounds, just for the sake of them 'matching' the rest of my BD collection, being able to view them in 1080p rather than 1080i, and being able to use a single player.

Bearing in mind that I'd watched most of the movies already, it just wasn't worth £200-300 just to re-buy what I already have. I'd much rather put the funds towards all-new BD's, and continue to use the HD-DVD's if and when I (very rarely) want to watch one of them again.

Re: Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

As above , i would keep them imop.. also you did not list HD-DVD films . there is allot of hd-dvd's that are not released on blu-ray .. and it all depends if you just want one player to do all, one reason a few on classifieds ect, just want to sell ..

Keep your equipment, buy more HD DVDs and build up a decent collection I simply can't understand people selling when there's so many ridiculously cheap HD DVD bargains to be had.I can't get enough of them.I just love'm.

Re: Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

I got a decent return on the HD DVD Discs that I sold, but that was some months ago.

To be honest,I wish that I'd kept my E1 now.

And I didn't get any feedback from the buyer!

Totally agree.

Watch the movies in glorious HD - and at rediculously cheap prices - and sell the ones you don't want to watch ever again.

Keep the one's you like and buy movies not available on HD-DVD on BR

Re: Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

Rather than selling my HD-DVD player and discs, I have actually bought a back up HD player because my XE1 didn't play one movie (Out of dozens I have thrown at it) ! Wouldn't want to chance the player dying as I value my HD DVD collection too much

I say keep it, HD-DVD always was the better format.

Laserdisc lost out to VHS, but ask anyone now which of those two players they wished they owned.

VHS was there long before Laserdisc. Laserdisc eventually lost to DVD. What lost to VHS was betamax

I know this but after Betamax was gone Laserdisc came along and tried and failed to take VHS's crown.

Re: Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

Ok, I was really just trying to say HD-DVD's are the new Lazerdisc and failed miserably at it.

But I say to the OP keep the HD-DVD player, at the very least the cost to replace those disks on blu would be far too much, and wasteful given that you have often identical masters on HD already.

Re: Is it worth me selling my HD DVD player and discs

Actually incorrect. Philips originally developed the "Discovision" which was the precursor to Laserdisc. The competitor was RCA's CED Disc. Key difference was a "Caddy" which enclosed the discs and a "Stylus" similar to a record player. That battle was fought long and hard with Pioneer being a key ally in the battle. Had these two organisations not fought and confused the marketplace who can say what might have been. A third format of disc was released in Japan. From memory JVC was the progenitor. FWIW...VHS had it over Beta in running time. Bigger box...longer play. ...Mike in OZ

According to Wiki, VHS became public late 70's.
Laserdisc: Became public mid to late 80's

So perhaps not 'long before' but 'before' maybe more correct.
