Toshiba goes Blu - implications?

Having just seen the news that Toshiba will be joining the BDA it opens up some possibilities.
I wonder if they will be producing any designs themselves for players or just buying in OEM ones.

I'd still like a combined HD/Blu deck if they brought one to market (especially if it could play the new chinese disks too )

Not holding my breath though....

Re: Toshiba goes Blu - implications?

I'm not sure that there are any implications to this; other than the fact that there is another major player in the market - which can only be a good thing.

Toshiba are just responding to the reality of the market. They need to have BD drives into their laptops to sell them and bundling BD players with TV's help's to sell those as well.

I had hoped that Tosh would have gone Blu immediately after the format war ended and introduced a hybrid BD/HD DVD player.

Although I'd still like that to happen; I know it won't. As Toshiba is now (or soon will be) on the Blu bandwaggon; it's not really in their interest to revive interest in HD DVD even if it was included just for legacy playback.

I agree with Drongo.

The chances of Tosh adding support for a now defunt format are so slim as to be non-existant.

And everybody in the CE and movie industry has a vested interest in seeing China going down it's own seperate path.

The CE companies get to sell higher margin Blu-ray players to the developed world, Tosh get to make money on their HD-DVD tech and the movie industry really doesn't want to see mass produced pirate Blu-ray discs coming out of China.

If you want to play China Blue I think you will need to import a player.
