True hd from ep30

Hi i just bought a toshiba ep30 with 30 hd dvd's from ebay, ive just been looking at the features on the discs and only one film has true HD for the audio features, this film is troy, or the other films just say dolby digital plus, i thought all HD films has true HD sounds. Also when playing one of these films on my avr reciever it says multi- CH PCM on the avr screen instead of dolby digital or true HD?

First off congrats on your purchase, its a good machine! Ok not all HD DVD's/Blu-Ray's are going to come with HD audio (i.e) Bourne Trilogy HD DVD, DreamGirls (belongs to the misses before anyone starts lol), etc, where is others do (i.e) Troy, V For Vendetta, Matrix Trilogy, etc

With regards to the Multi PCM this is because the decoding of the TruHD track cannot be done by the EP30 and has to be decoded by your amp hence the PCM. You can however achieve TruHD bitstreaming from the EP30 by making it region free (search the forums it is there somewhere) and flashing it with EP35 firmware PLEASE DO NOTE THOUGH THAT FLASHING FIRMWARE AND MAKING YOUR EP30 REGION FREE/CHANGING FIRMWARE CAN BRICK YOUR PLAYER and it will only be region free in the respect of DVDs as HD DVDs are regionless anyway. Hope this helps

No you done a good choice with EP30 and its not a problem to be able to 'bitstream' TruHD if you know what you are doing and yes I have previously owned one and I have flashed it aswell... just looking for the link and download package for you. I swear I had it here somewhere

EDIT: This is the link you need. Read it through and best of luck

Toshiba EP30 Region Free Firmware

EDIT 2: Reading more into it I am 'wrong' with being able to bitstream TruHD.... sorry fella but you can still make it multi region

I'm confused, I thought the EP30 did decode it and sent it as multi channel LPCM to a receiver?

Re: True hd from ep30

If you look on the front above the DVD tray - it has the Dolby true HD logo (along with others) on the EP30, but does not give me option to send to amp via Bitstream?

I currently set the EP30 to send audio by PCM (other options available Downmix PCM & Auto)

Im aware that my EP30 does not decode the Dolby true HD itself, but It goes to my Sony amp which does decode all hd audio. If I press the display button on my ep30 remote, it says Dolby true HD.

Is this correct?

Re: True hd from ep30

My understanding of it is that when you use PCM the HD DVD player decodes the HD audio and sends it to the amp. When you use bitstreaming the HD DVD player sends the audio stream "raw" to the amp and the amp does the decoding.

The reason why some people prefer bitstreaming is that they mean that the amp does a better job in decoding the HD audio as it is made for this purpose.

In its original firmware, the EP30 can not send the audio as bitstream via HDMI. That's why some go for the EP35 instead. By installing EP35 firmware on the EP30 you can get it to bitstream the "lossy" HD codecs, but not the lossless ones (Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD MA).

Re: True hd from ep30

As long as my setup is correct to recieve HD audio im happy. I was flicking between the dolby digital setting and Dolby true HD, and can hear a slight improvement.

I personally dont care what/where the decoding is done. For me the difference of where the HD audio is decoded will not be noticable on my speakers.

Does your sony amp show pcm 96khz on both the dd+ & trueHD tracks as mine does.

bear in mind that dolby d+ is at least going to be 640kbs,if not the full 1.5mbs,more than enough to knock the spots off vanilla DD in a decent system

Spot on.

I've found DD+ is a much bigger improvement over DD than DolbyTrue is over DD+

I think DD+ vs Dolby True is a bit like a high quality DD track compared to DTS - not a lot in it especially with HC Amp limitations. We all know even a £2k amp can't deliver anywhere near the detail that a decent hifi amp can, so there is a question of how much extra detail can you make use of.

I've a Yamaha AX1 and DD+ from XE1 via 6 phonos is superb. Actually DTS HD MA downscaled by my BR player into DTS (I assume 1.5mbts) also rocks my socks as although I loose out a little on detail, I make use of my Yams DSPs and therefore have my front effect speakers and rear centre back in action - 8.2 instead of 5.2 (.2 due to slit subs front and back).

Hmm... at this point in time I honestly cant remember as I havent played about with it since my last post. Off the top of my head but i'm pretty sure it says Linear PCM [46Khz]

What settings have you got your EP30 & on your DG820? Be interesting to see if i cocked a setting on one or the other.

My EP30 HDMI is set to PCM and i think i put dynamic range on. DG820 s all set on auto ADF

Re: True hd from ep30

Ok, I have played about with "300" which has a Dolby true HD track.

My settings on the EP30 Audio are as follows:
Digital OUT SPDIF - [Bitstream]
Digital OUT HDMI [PCM]
Dynamic Range [ON]
Dialogue Enhancement [ON]

with those settings above, i changed the track to Dolby trueHD on the dvd menu and my Sony STR-DG820 is showing LINEAR PCM [48]khz with a little LPCM logo just above it?!

Looks like il have to try the spdif to bitstream So is {48}khz trueHD & [96]khz wrong When set to pcm it still lights up blu led on front of amp & is multichannel surround & sounds fantastic but I guess it might be just DD+ even when truHD is selected.

spdif
i believe is for optical or coax setting. from what i gather you are getting dolby true hd. i think your getting 96 khz because you have a better amp which receive higher frequencies for better sound.
by all means, correct me if iam wrong anyone.

That makes sence I mean its multichannel & does sound incredible much like the dts-ma/pcm/trueHD on blu ray. Just says exactly the same when playing the DD+ track to 96khz pcm. On your amp does it say 48khz pcm on both th eDD+ & trueHD & the only real reason u know its different is from sound quality & that that TruHD has been selected on the ep30

it does i was in same boat , i expected the Hi-def to run higher than 48Hz
also your Ep30 will not Bitstream so the amp does the decoding .. the ep30 decodes in player .. you can only send out Pcm .. the Ep35 sends bitstream .
i would check amp settings also ..

Re: True hd from ep30

I had this problem where all I was getting was multi channel on the display (newly bought onkyo 507) and when I pressed the display button on the ep30 remote it was showing the sound as DD+ so I pressed the audio button on the EP30 remote and it changed to True HD , you've probably tried this so apologies but it took me a while to work it out lol.

Just out of interest.. What do these do:
Dynamic Range Control
Dialog Enhancement

Mine are both set to "ON" as they both sounded "fancy" do I actually need them on at all?
