EXCLUSIVE! JVC DLA-HD350 Projector Review - 1080p D-ILA

Reviewed by Phil Hinton
The JVC DLA-HD350 moves the performance levels for dynamic range and black levels on a few steps from last years HD1. Indeed it now offers the type of performance last seen on the company's outgoing HD100. With added competition in the market it has a harder battle on its hands this time around for the entry machine, but has a performance in most areas the competition will struggle to meet. However, it still lacks a CMS control and has a wider than ideal colour gamut out of the box, which cannot be fixed in calibration. But overall we think it's still a fine machine and it comes highly recommended.

Thanks great review. Main question in my mind is would you upgrade if you had the HD1?

I wonder if the shop in Guildford I bought the HD1 from a few months ago would let me upgrade for the price difference?

Hi Phil

I read your reviews of HW10 and RS10. Both are great, thank you. Perhaps you put the wrong image on the "calibrated" CIE Chart of RS10 review? Seems the same of the uncalibrated one to me.

However, I have a question for you. When I saw years ago the RS1 and VW60 I noticed that the VW60 was really faster than RS1. On JVC the "motion blur" was really annoying to me.

Now I see that under "cons" about HW10 you write "Slight issues with resolution detail on fast moving scenes" that is exactly that motion blur I hate.

I saw in person both HW10 and RS10 but was a short demo and I didn't have the time to check this issue.

Since you noticed this issue on HW10 and you didn't write anything about it on RS10 I suppose that RS10 really does not have the same issue of RS1. I'm going to buy one of them and I'd like your professional opinion.

Thanks for your great reviews!

Ciao
Antonio from Italy

Just a guess but there isn't a CMS on the HD350 thus you can't calibrate the primary and secondary x,y points to meet a standard gamut i.e. BT.709, SMTPE-C etc. Hence the CIE chart looks the same.

I don't know much in video calibration, I tought that something could be made without CMS too...

Thanks

Hi Antonio

To properly adjust the primary/secondary x,y points i.e. CIE gamut you need a CMS. Sometimes there can be some interaction with other controls i.e. colour that can affect x,y positions but they do not allow calibration. There is also another colour dimension called luminance that isn't shown on the CIE but also requires calibration to target standard.

The over saturated (wide) colour gamut of all the recent JVC D-ILA PJ's (apart from the HD750/RS20 which has some control) cannot be corrected by calibration alone. Hence Phil's feedback to JVC at the bottom of the review and the comment about colour/CMS in the cons section.

Hi Avi

You're right, I have never thought about it. I thought that the gamut could be adjusted in other way.
Thanks.

Thanks Phil if you can give me the opinion about Motion Blur I asked above!

Ciao
