Sharp LC-46LE700 LCD HDTV Review

Reviewed by David Mackenzie
The image put out by the LC-46LE700 after calibration is by no means terrible, but the unfortunate truth is that this display really doesn't excel in any area above its competitors, other than eco-efficiency.

Re: Sharp LC-46LE700 LCD HDTV Review

How would you say the contrast performance of this set compares to an equivalent CCFL set such as the W5500 in low ambient light?

Despite the shortfalls, I'm still oddly drawn to this one.

In case anyone missed it, the calibration settings will be different for each person depending on the source equipment being fed to your TV and the various settings therein. And because of the lighting conditions of your room. And because the settings on your Sharp LC-46LE700 may produce slightly different results from this one being tested.
So copying the settings from one Sharp LC-46LE700 to another, with different sources (or the same sources with different settings) and different lighting conditions is unreliable. And unscientific.
If you want your TV to produce its best results, have it calibrated.

Re: Sharp LC-46LE700 LCD HDTV Review

dont share settings, we all know the inbuilt presets are spot on to cover our viewing area. Just select a bright one, a sport mode etc as they dont all look **** on all sets nor in all rooms... do they

come on man share ya toys , you know it'll get people way closer to perfection than any preset

Are you joking?

The presets as David explains are horrendous before calibration. Just select a bright one? Really, if thats the kind of image you strive for then perhaps what we are focussed on here is not for you - and I don't mean to sound pompous with that comment.
There are plenty of threads out there to read that will explain what a good picture is, how to achieve it and why sharing settings is not a good idea.
Hope that helps - a good starting point are the tutorial videos.

Adtomov: where did you get that image from? Here's a closeup (closest I could focus on the screen, anyway) of the LC-46LE700 which shows the subpixel layout.

Repeated here just in case people browsing in the Comments view can't see it:

Hi, David Mackenzie :-)
My own photo, of course. I have a 20x optical zoom camera with an ultra-macro attachment I've made myself. I would never allow to myself to post directly something that is not my production. In that case I post links only.

Hi, David Mackenzie
What you shot-subpiksels areas are not in line at 100% level of white-like the old S-MVA matrices of the CMO, which are under license from Sharp.
SHARP placed the such matrices in models in size 42 "-because they do not produce such a size

Interesting reading, thanks - will see if I can plow through it with Google Translate.

Would you like me to take any other close-up photos of the LC-46LE700 I have here? I don't have equipment as specialised as what you used, though.

Yes, it will be good to know if there is any difference in sets here in Bulgaria and rest of the world.

Here's is forum translated from Bulgarian to English

With Adtomov got the idea to open a specialized theme-matrix LCD and hope to include Mikl1984

For better results You should use macro equipment. And a stand for the camera.

i agree with you john. The settings from one calibrated tv might not be spot on but they must be a million times better than the factory pre sets. It's at least a better starting point for us lesser mortals
