Reviewed by David Mackenzie
If installing a projector isn't an option in your viewing environment, and you absolutely can't stand letterboxed movies, then this display is currently your only choice.

I have seen one of these in my local philips outlet (an independent) and have to say i was very impressed with it. I have always been a fan of philips' ambilight technology and on this 21:9 tv it looks amazing, i don't find it distracting at all.

The review says pretty much what I expected.

An interesting idea which introduces as many problems as it solves, on a TV whose PQ isn't up to a similarly sized plasma which can be had for less.

Seems like a very solid "first attempt".

Given 12 months we may well see the same format TV's without the issues mentioned.

I like the idea in general, and it's also kinda quirky at this point, would like to see one in the flesh.

All of this is very interesting as more films will be filmed in the IMAX & 3D format in the future (Dark Knight / Avatar / Batman 3...) so will these screens & CIH become old hat?
Im not a CIH naysayer quite the opposite but makes for some interesting thinking .

Re: Philips 56PFL9954H 21:9 LCD HDTV Review

As with all Philips TVs, this one also doesn't correctly support 24Hz, so no pans without 3:2 judder, unless 200Hz processing is activated...I am continuously shocked at this oversight by Philips, and in a cinematic TV, wandering why this part of picture performance wasn't reviewd...24Hz is probably the second most crucial factor in cinematic experience...
