Optoma Themescene HD82 DLP Projector Review

Reviewed by Phil Hinton
Overall, while the colour space performance could be slightly improved to make it more accurate to the content you are likely to want to watch, the greyscale performance when calibrated is certainly reference level. Blacks are solid and contrast performance is also up there with some of the best machines in the £5k and under price range. In the end we recommend you get a demonstration of the HD82 as it is a solid projector at the price point.

Phil, thanks for that excellent review.

A couple of questions for you.:

1 - What would you say are the pros and cons of this vs the 750? Which would you buy, and why?

2 - Improved zoom is nice. Is that zoom flexible enough to use it as a 'CIH-without-anamorphic' projector? If so, how far away from a 3m wide ('scope) screen would it need to be placed?

Cheers.

Our reference machine is the HD750 so I think that says everything. (Black levels, and reference colour performance). The Optoma is good, but not in the same class (or price point). Will be more interesting to see the HD86 which is in the same price level as the HD750 and more of a competitor (it has a cms/white balance and gamma controls).
You will have to work the second one out yourself as the sample has gone back. Remember you would need to zoom manually and focus each time you moved in most circumstances. If that's the approach you want to take I would recommend the PT-AE3000 which has memory settings for this approach with focus and zoom.

D'OH!

I just saw the comment about it being in the '£5k and under' price bracket, and guessed it was £4,999. My mistake.

To see the suggested price for items reviewed, look at the left hand box which has the pricing just under the product name. (On some reviews it will also include a todays best price after searching merchants).

Re: Optoma Themescene HD82 DLP Projector Review

As I was considering this projector as my next stage up from HD65 it was useful to read that the HD82 is not really suitable for table /shelf use. I currently project from a coffee table at about 2ft from the floor onto a 6ft 16:9screen and from what i read in your review it seems as though it would not be suitable. Thank you for your comprehensive review. DSH
