External HDD on netowrk for access via internet

I am after recommendations for an external HDD (something around 500GB) that I can connect to the network here and access on all the computers AND over the internet via some kind of secure login via FTP/Web browser etc. I guess this would be a NAS drive with something like DYnDNS? Need something fast and reliable. The drive would be connected straight to an existing Linksys router, although I would consider replacing this if another model is recommended.

As well as being a central place to access data whilst out of the office, I would like advice on setting up the computers to automatically back up contents of their HDD's to this network HDD.

What is the best way of going about this and what hardware to you recommend?

Many thanks, Dan

Look into building a WHS box. It will do everything you've asked and more.
