data retrieval?????

hia, right heres my problem. my laptops thermal cut out has gone, runs until it gets hot and switches off. im wanting to take the hard drive out and put in in to another computer to rescue the data. the main question i have is that the broken computer runs xp, i have a compaq that runs vista. can i take the hard drive and put it in to the compaq and make it work?
or is there a better way of doing it?
Is the old laptop repairable? (ie new power supply or mother board etc?)

cheers in advance

Re: data retrieval?????

Put the hardrive in an external caddy and get the data back that way. If the data is corrupt or deleted , try and use something similar to EasyRecovery by OnTrack.

Its quite straight forward

Re: data retrieval?????

as far as i can tell the hard drive is 100% fine and working. what do i do? just plug the hard drive into the caddy and then plug it into a usb? will it show up as a removable drive?
