Seagate momentus XT

Just ordered a 750gb one of these to go in my 2011 macbook pro , was considering a SSD but the cost per gb was just too high for me to swallow .
Has anybody else tried one of these in a macbook ? I know the performance won' t be quite as fast as a full SSD , but do these hybrid drives improve on a stock drive noticeably ?

From the reviews I've seen it's comparable to the Velociraptor performance-wise, i.e. some improvement on a conventional hard drive if you don't mind paying the premium but a long way off an SSD in areas where they make the biggest difference.

If you're more interested in battery life then I can't see it making much of a difference, the extra performance is likely to be offset by being attached to a 7200rpm drive.

I think the hydrid drives are good and perform very well compared to any purely mechanical drive, there are plenty of reviews and comparisons out there. It really depends on the cost though but recently I have seen prices for them only a little more expensive than regular hard drives which is decent

fiited the new drive tonight , first impressions....
First boot was about 10 seconds faster , i have rebooted 4 times , each time this has dropped by 5 seconds.
Once apps are opened once , the next time they open instantly .
iphoto & itunes are very fast to open now.
Chrome & Safari ... instant now .
so far so good ...

They are ok if you use frequently used programs. But I can tell you they won't match a velociraptor. The raptors simply spin faster and have a lower access time and rotational latency.
