Re: Which is the best Halo game to buy - Xbox360

If you are new to the 360, then I'd say get Halo 3. This is the first Halo for the 360 and still stands up today (although it has been out a couple of years). You should be able to pick it up really cheaply. I'm not sure what the online community is like anymore, but the last time I looked, it was in the top two for the number of people online (that was a few months ago though).

ODST (or whatever it is called) is due out or new out (don't know the release date) and therefore still expensive.

One of the joys of getting a console a couple of years after release is playing great games which are dirt cheap!

If you are after other FPS' then my personal favourites are CoD4 and Left 4 Dead. Both brilliant online (but so is Halo 3!)

If you're after online play then it has to be ODST as it has the Halo 3 multiplayer content complete with all the map packs which you'd pay extra for otherwise. It also has Firefight mode

If it's just a single player game you're after then i'd go for Halo 3 as it can be picked up much cheaper, you can get ODST after if you like Halo 3 (and you will)

Re: Which is the best Halo game to buy - Xbox360

Have you played the other Halo games? Because I feel they need to be played in order, or atleast you need to play Halo 2 before Halo 3.

Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST are great, but I'd play ODST after Halo 3 (although it is a prequel to Halo 3 it should be played after it). To really know what ODST is about you need to have played Halo 2.

Re: Which is the best Halo game to buy - Xbox360

I often think this is why there is so much Halo Hate. People who haven't played them in order and seen the way the story progressed go 'Meh, this is over-rated'.

I was having an argument with a friend who doesn't like Halo. He kept saying Doom 3 had better graphics and X, Y. It wasn't until I showed him that Halo: CE was 4years older than Doom 3 that it put it in perspective.

Cod modern warfare is the best Halo game on the 360

But I would go back to the start and download Halo combat evolved, start at the beginning.

I may as well wait for this ODST if a new one is due out soon, I played COD 5 on my PS3 and just waiting for COD 6, Left 4 Dead never heard of that one up until now lol, I believe Left 4 Dead 2 is out soon so may as well wait for that, thanks

No, never mate I was unaware of ODST so I may as well get that rather than Halo 3, thanks anyway

This is sadly soo true.

The story is great in the Halo games but it boggles my mind how anyone can play Halo 3 without playing the first two.... its like watching back to the future part 3 without watching part 1,2 .... sure you can watch it, but does it really make sense?

I strongly advise you to play Halo 1 (Halo:CE).... yes its not going to be in HD, and its an xbox 1 title, but that game still holds it head high even today... then move onto Halo 2 and then Halo 3..... I just can't see how you can make sense of everything if you just play halo 3 only.

You could play halo:odst after you've finished halo 2 and then move onto halo 3 after ODST as this is true to the timeline.

I jumped on COD 5 OK without being left confused, I was told previously in this thread that only Halo 3 is available on the Xbox360 so I don't think I'm going to get the Xbox console just to play the other Halo games, one way or another I will get the jist of ODST

Dude, Halo 1 & 2 can be downloaded onto your Xbox 360 via Games Marketplace, look for Xbox Originals or you could pick the games up 2nd hand and they will work on the 360.

Halo 1 & 2 are backward compatible on the 360

Re: Which is the best Halo game to buy - Xbox360

Anyone who gets a shiny new xbox 360 and then goes and plays an original xbox game needs their head read, maybe get em further down the line and replay all 3 though (been meaning to do that for ages myself but am having trouble keeping up with the current 360 games)
There is a site where you can watch the cut scenes from the first 2 to get you caught up on story too although i can't find the link, maybe someone else on here can point you to it (i found it through a link on here)

Argh,

Another one joins the 'Halo is teh suxxors, the story is rubbish' brigade.

And what is wrong with playing Xbox games on your 360? If you have never played a great game because you didn't have the console then why not play it when it is backward compatible. Many complained that the PS3/360 have poor BC because a library of hundreds of great games is no longer available.

Who has said the story is rubbish ?

antacid - No they are not free
You could probably pick up the discs for a few quid each.
But i would not worry about it, i played Halo 3 and enjoyed the Single Player and have played the Single Player of ODST both good campaigns. If you like the look of them then pick them up and give them a go.

Yes, you can play it on the 360, including the extensive online side (except if you connect via VGA cable - that doesn't work for online, only SP). Just pick up a cheap copy from e-bay or an online marketplace. Well worth a few quid.

COD 5? .... thats not the same thing is it? Halo 1, 2 and 3 are all interlinked in terms of story, COD4 has 'nothing' to do with COD5 in terms of story ... some could argue that you could skip halo 1 since it has a beginning middle and end, where as halo 2 drifts into halo 3.

Its up to you anyway, I just can't see how you can obtain the full value of the games campaign when the previous games actually explain 'whats going on' ... eg. What is a halo, who made it, what exactly does it do.

I wouldn't expect you to buy an original xbox to play, I would expect you to make use of your xbox 360's backward compatibility mode, meaning you can play some xbox 1 titles on the 360, including halo 1 and halo 2.

Yes, actually it is.

If you read most of reviews they will generally be quite poor, a lot of this is down to a few factors in my opinion:

+ You play 2 roles, Master Cheif and the Arbiter ... some people didn't like playing as the arbiter at first, they just wanted to play as the MC all the time, but you get used to playing the arbiter.

+ Awful ending.... its the way it ended, a lot of gamers were really unhappy about it. (but not really an issue now, as halo 3 continues 1 month after the ending of halo 2).

Other than that, yes its a great game and will explain a lot about why such things happened in Halo 3 etc.

The multiplayer was a blast back on the day, its still going but obviously there are more people on Halo 3's Multiplayer, I would defo recommend playing it.

I would not be knowing if COD 5 carries on from COD 4 and vice versa, all new to me but think I will use this backward compatibility mode if the games are not so much to buy then again is it worth it, I look around for search results on Google and see that their is plenty of mixed reviews about Halo, I will only know if I try it out for myself

Personally I think Halo 2 is not up to the technical quality and polish of the first and third games (and now ODST too). Sure I read somewhere Bungie scrapped the game in the middle of development, and had to restart after the release date had already been announced. If you go back and look at the original trailer, and gameplay footage that was demo'd and E3, its not what the final game came to be. I think they originally planned to do a full scale Earth invasion by the Covenant, but probably had to scale it back, maybe due to the hardware limitations, and chose to finish the story on the 360.

Yep - I think there were extra levels from 'Metropolis' ... if that's how you spell it, very much like some of the levels in ODST, which never made it, not to mention some cinematics that never made it when the game was released:

Re: Which is the best Halo game to buy - Xbox360

Halo 2 makes much better use of the Xbox hardware than Halo: CE. I am not saying Halo: CE isn't a fantastic game, but do a side by side comparison and I can't see how anyone can argue Halo 2 lacks polish and scale.

Practically every game has deleted levels either due to time constraints, the fact they aren't good, they disturbed the fluidity of the game. Halo: 3 had a deleted level which became Guardian on MP.

CoD: 4 and 5 are not related at all. CoD4 is set in around 2006, CoD5 is set around 1944.

Re: Which is the best Halo game to buy - Xbox360

Halo 1 ce is by far the best campaign game in the series. It is incredibly well thought out...........just when you think you have the pace of the game sorted Bungie completely turn it on its head when the Flood are introduced and suddenly you are backing up with a shotgun playing , what is effectively, a zombie shooter. Absolutely genius game planning that 2 or 3 never even came close to. The latter overly depended on multiplayer to sell the game but totally lacked the campaign depth of the first game. I know the graphics might be a bit ropey now in comparison but if you're a Halo virgin you simply must start with the first game - best levels - The one when you first drive the scorpion, the first flood level and the bridge crossing sections....

Yep - I think its just awesome how everyone that has played halo 1 had the exact same reaction when it comes to being introduced to the flood.

What's really interesting is that ever since MS came on aboard the series has felt a bit .... watered down.... remember Halo 1 was being made well before Microsoft purchased Bungie....

Now that they are independent again I think Halo Reach is going to be great, mainly because it takes place before Halo 1 meaning we will possibly get to fight the elites again, it doesn't matter how many times Bungie go on about how the Brutes are fearsome more so than ever blah blah, they still look like dumb apes, where as the elites were amazing to duel with.

I find it hilarious when people say 'You must be dumb to play an xbox1 game on a new 360 console' - especially when games like Halo 1 destroys Halo 3 completely.

Re: Which is the best Halo game to buy - Xbox360

Yeah Halo CE was amazing for a pretty old game now, Astonished when i first played that on the xbox. Was the first game to support 16 player system link on a console. (doubt anyone did it tho. )

Do people still play online in the PC version? Not a Halo online fan really but been meaning to get it to try.
