Question First Impressions of Halo ODST

What are your first impressions of Halo ODST?

I am finding the game looks rather dark and not as colourful as Halo 3. I am also not 100% sure on the health system ie the health packs.

The dropping of dual wield is a strange move, why did Bungie remove it from the game?

I love all the Halo games but this one hasnt grabbed me as much as the others did. Perhaps it will grow on me.

I think it's all to differenciate ODST's from Master Chief.

Master Chief is the super solider who can jump higher, who's health regenerate and is strong and smart enough to operate 2 weapons at once all while wearing the heavy Spartan amour (while writing that bit I had the Halo 3 music that plays right before the action hots up playing in my head )

I think a lot of the choices were made to make your ODST character seem weaker when compared to the chief.

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

for a full priced release with a short campaign its pretty shabby that there is no co-op/firefight matchmaking always loved the halo campaigns though and im enjoying this one too, i started on heroic then my 360 kept crashing and losing all my saves so went down to normal. it should definately be played at least on heroic to get a good challenge, and will redo it on that if find some co-op homies. thought the health thing would be an issue but its fine

The no firefight matchmaking thing really p****s me off. Being an older gamer I don't really have many people on my friends list as most of my mates are serious grown ups with no love of gaming, it's my guilty secret. I wish Bungie had given us the choice, I know it's probably best to play firefight in a well coordinated team with all your buddies but I really don't care who I play with. bah.

Im strongly considering finishing the campaign and selling it on without the multiplayer disk.

Select AVF Firefight and then click Profile and then click on Friends. It should give you a list of everyone else who are Friends with AVF Firefight and you can see if they are online and playing ODST

I think its ok, but I dont see what all the fuss is about really.

Its well made as you would expect but apart from that I wouldnt say its a 9/10 game.

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

MUCH more difficult than Halo 3! I'm currently playing on Normal and it's a challenge. The default weapons are great, though I miss the BR, which I'd normally only use in the campaign anyway. I'm not a huge fan of the vast amount of exploration; they didn't pull it off just right. A few weak missions, but nothing too dire. Firefight is great, but only really effective in co-op with 3+ people. Speaking of which, send me a friend request if you wanna do some Firefight . So far, a fair game.

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

My views, in short !

The flashbacks are awesome, and a fantastic (re)addition is the pistol! Grphics and atmosphere is stunning!

The night sections - love the HUD, and some of the sections are great, and the city-scape looks stunning. However, their are large parts which just do nothing just walking from one place to another - what's that about? Like the audiologs, but don't add much!

I'd give it 7.5 out of 10

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

reading it below about no match making is a big surprise to me. I'd automatically thought it would have it in. Although much prefer playing with others on my friends lists, there are times when no one is on and i'd still like to play.

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

my first play thro i nailed it on legendary, started at 11 this morning an finished at 9 tonight, peeps said it could be done within 2.5hours etc they mustve done it on easy, was a good game but it wasnt on par with halo 3, didnt like the idea of running between missions and killng the "odd" enemy lurking about with boring miami vice love music playin in the background, its as if they added this in so it prolonged the game that bit further which seems a tad cheap, i really liked firefight tho, me an a few mates had a blast at this, thought it would be neigh impossible to reach 200k for the achievement but we nailed it on our 2nd attempt, all of us were totally in the zone playin this and it was fantastic

I am hoping this may change at some point but its not's a deal breaker. COD 5 eventually offered match making on Nazi Zombies & Co-OP Campaign, so maybe Bungie will add this at some point? The problem with this is that I find when playing with randoms on Nazi Zombies you either get people who don’t talk, people who just drop out shortly after starting or people who lets just say are not particularly friendly...

Like any co-op game it is much better playing with friends.
As mentioned earlier join the AVF Firefight friends list, I played with some of the guys on the Firefight list last night and a good time was had by all!

As for the campaign. Still a long way to go but liking the flash back idea, I also like the music (must be showing my age) It gives it a more mysterious feel to the game.

Playing on Heroic and its tough. Even the little grunts can be quite a challenge!

I thought the graphics were a bit dissapointing to be honest, then again if you go back to Halo 3 the graphics are terrible in places...

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

Graphics are good and sound, particularly the score, is stunning. Not keen on all the walking around as the Rookie between tasks as it gets tedious very quickly. Personally I think the game is way to short, first one i have ever finished in one sitting

Over all I guess I enjoyed it but am please that I rented rather than bought. It should really have been left as a downloadable add on as originally planned rather than a full release with a Halo 3 Multiplayer add on disc which many people will already have, in my personal opinion Bungie and MS have just turned it into a cash cow

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

I only managed to get a 30 minute game of firefight in with a team of 4. All I can say is absolutely awesome!

Unfortunately we had to quit as I had to go but we were on 120,000 points with 8 lives left. The Bonus round was one of the most intense, crazy things I have ever seen. Literally about 50 grunts dropped down and all threw plasmas at the same time. There wasn't an ounce of slowdown. Amazing!

I can't believe we're going through the whole "graphics in halo look ****" debate - they aren't if you actually look at the detail, lighting and size of the maps.

Not had a chance to try the campaign yet or crack open the Mythic maps. For a halo fan there is so much value here.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Gray - there's nothing in the ODST package that is going to convince people that don't like Halo to suddenly fall in love with the franchise. For fanboys like you and me however, its just another big fat dollop of Halo awesome sauce, one which I'm sure we'll be lapping up for a long long time.

Not quite the picture I painted after my first 20 minutes of firefight. Something along the lines of "got wood"

That was the first time I'd seen the bonus round when all them grunts were 'delivered'......just truly incredible, with no 'slow-down' at all and sticky grenades flying everywhere........Sordid must have been in heaven

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

Positives - Gameplay in spades, fantastic atmosphere, great set pieces, single player campaign great but 4 player co-op is awesome. Loving the sound and graphics with some real wow moments. Firefight is the donkey's conkers - simple as.

Negatives - they seem to have made a pig's ear of the save system. I've played some solo and co-op on heroic but was finding it heavy going so cranked it to normal - and I seem to have to start again (solo). its not a problem but I've never had the right number of audio diaries, was on 10 now back to 3. So it goes.

All in all. If you like Halo you'll love this.

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

Positives - love the new MP maps, especially Heretic and Citadel (or 'Home of the Perfection' as I now know it ), the campaign is really atmospheric, love the musical score, the graphics definitely seem even more polished than in H3, Firefight is just ridiculous amounts of fun, increasing the Service Tag from 3 characters to 4, the new menus, VISR mode, FREE Premium 'Prepare to Drop' theme.........there's bound to be more that I've missed.....

What's this word 'Negatives' that you used in your post......not sure what that means

All in all, I <3 Halo, and I <3 ODST.

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

Currently playing solo on Legendary (and im pants) and so far I like it a lot. I've only just finished the second level but the story is really good and I love the way it unfolds. It did feel odd using health packs but not a prob any more. Think i'll wait till I finish campaign before I hit firefight

Firefight is a blast, enjoying it more than horde on GOW2.

Got to a bonus round and I was Talk about an onslaught!

Agreed, non-Halo fans / casual gamers could well find the overall package a bit light compared to the asking price, although you could argue that anyone who hasn't got Halo 3 is getting a pretty sweet deal with a second disc that includes the entire H3 multiplayer experience!

Re: First Impressions of Halo ODST

I gave Firefight a blast last night, and it's just silly amounts of fun! I wanted to get a feel for it before teaming up, so played on my own with the difficulty set to easy, and even then it was a quite a challenge when things started to pick up.

I wouldn't say the new multiplayer maps are the most inspiring, but they definitely fill gaps in the roster, so should help to further the variety in matchmaking.

Haven't got very far with the campaign as yet; just need to find a free evening to play it!!
