Have you guys never heard of this dude? Bit of a leg-end with regards to slimming down XP. Well his own pages are off-line at the mo', but this link (and other contained within) should keep you going for a while...
http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP%20Services.htm
I once got XP running happily (not on-line) and could install and play games with about 50-60Mb of RAM used (before games started), but not now thanks to ATI CCCrappp.
Happy reading, give us a shout if you need more info RE this stuff, I've been messing with this for some time now, many system lock ups! heh heh heh

Re: Optimizing XP for gaming
I've recently upgraded one of my PC's from ME to XP and playing games has become a real chug-a-thon. I'll try some of these tips to speed it up a tad! Thx!

Switch themes back on.
Really, its just eye candy for the desktop.
You dont need it to use windows.
Like I keep saying, this is a guide inteded to strip windows down so as to be more efficient for gaming.

"System Restore Service" is in the services tab.
You dont need it unless you actually use that function. personaly I think it doesnt work very well as ive tried using it before and it didnt do anything.
If windows crashes in some major way, the only way to fix it is usually to re-install windows.

Are you using SP2? If you look carefully it should be there. Im pretty sure it should be in XP sp1. Or was it added in SP2?
