Can I disable graphics card?

Hi

I have just bought a new PC which has a AMD HD6670 graphics card.

I'm constantly getting the message 'Display driver AMD stopped responding and has recovered', the PC freezes, comes up with that message and then works again.

I've tried everything that comes up on google, downloading fix it patch from microsoft, updating drivers, underclocking GPU, changing windows 7 from Aero to basic but it keeps happening.

Can I just disable the Graphics card and use the onboard graphics?

I'm not that fussed about the graphics card because I got the PC at such a good price and I can't be bothered with the hassle of sending it back.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Leo

Have you uninstalled then reinstalled the drivers? AMD have never been terribly good with installers and stuff goes wrong during install far more frequently then it should.

Whether you can disable it from within windows depends on whether the motherboard supports using both at once, if it does the monitor cable should be plugged into the integrated graphics.

If it doesn't then you'll need to uninstall the drivers and then shut down the machine and take the card out (undo the single screw and then pull gently), the integrated graphics are disabled with a card in place.

I haven't tried uninstalling then reinstalling but I shall give it a go. Do I do this through catalyst or through the device folder?

Ideally I'd like to keep the graphics card but I've spent most of last night and this morning trying to get rid of the error with no joy.

The final straw was having the PC crash and displaying the blue screen error, for a 2 day old PC it doesn't fill me with much confidence.

I've got to open up the case anyway to fit blu ray drive so if reinstalling the drivers doesn't work I'll take the card out.

Uninstall properly first through add/remove programs or similar (the catalyst install manager or whatever it's called) and then you can go poking around and see if you can find any remnants, driver sweeper may also help.

You know that unless you bought it privately this is all the seller's responsibility to fix?

reinstall the OS if it is 2days old, or even Windows 8, get a fresh start and you shouldn't have any of these issues

Tried that and rebooted and everything seemed to be working fine, I went on to some websites with a lot of graphics and the error message came up again after freezing.

I bought of ebay through Dixons outlet, its a refurb and I only paid £288 for it (I5-2320, 8GB RAM, 1.5TB HDD, AMD HD6670, Win7). They have said they will offer a refund because they don't have any stock left. But to be honest I'd prefer to keep it because I think I'll struggle getting something similar for the same price.

Tried that this morning, updated windows, reinstalled Catalyst and drivers and error still happening.

Looks like I'll be popping the card out.

Catalyst 12.6 is a piece of crap! I've had a couple of driver crashes as well as the display underscanning every time I boot up. Seems to be a very buggy driver. Not sure how it got released.

Rolling back to 12.4 - that worked perfectly.

Using 12.4 has been a big improvement but I still occasionally got the error. I have gone back to 12.3 and not had the error for a full day.

If this one starts coming up with the error I will go back to 11.8 which i believe is the one originally shipped with the card I've got.

If that comes up with errors, it's coming out!

Sorry to bump this thread.

Right I have taken the graphics card out as Catalyst 12.3 worked for a while but then started getting 'display driver AMD stopped............' yet again.

Tried all earlier versions and latest versions with no luck.

Now the question is do you think this is worth selling as I don't know if it is a fault on the graphics card, a fault with the drivers, a fault on my PC or what.
Or is worthwhile sending it back to AMD?

Thanks

Leo

Your best to try it in another PC first, that way you can tell if its your PC & incompatibility or the GPU's faulty.
