That's not true.
Pretty much any cheap AMD graphics
chip supports three monitors but that's no guarantee that the card as a whole will do and many at £50-70 will only support two.
AMD's solution typically also requires that one of the three monitors be connected using DisplayPort so if you've bought the monitors already that may be a bigger barrier.
On the nVidia side the recently released GT 640 supports three monitors but it's so new the information about whether there's any particular combination of ports required for that is proving tricky to find. A low profile version of it may also be difficult to get at this point.
And from Matrox I don't think any of their 3/4 monitor cards are below £150.
