Thanks: Gave 0, Got 1 | GTAIV barely playable on my New HD TV???
GTA IV looks sumptuous and gorgeous on my new Bravia 40w4000. HOWEVER when the game is in night time the darkness means I can barely see anything. The game goes uber-dark.
My friend had an interesting suggestion that many HDTV's have automatic sensors in them to increase the brightness and black levels. I think in GTA IV that the TV thinks it should really emphasise the blacks and so automatically makes the game incredibly dark.
Anyone else have this issue. It's annoying, because I have my settings really well configured for 99% of PS3 games, but its just GTA IV at night.

I doubt it's that, my 40W3000 auto-dims when there is a dark scene, unless it's in Game Mode, i would have thought the newer models do exactly the same...

Make sure the PS3 settings are not on full RGB, keep it limited.

The new Sony Bravia's have built-in auto-dimming features, basically to try and hide any clouding in the panels after the 40W2000's panel was complained about so much. If there's hardly any light in the scene and it's not moving, the panel will dim once, then dim again till it goes almost black, it turns the backlight off. The only way round this is using "Game mode", but this limits the other options the panel has available.

I had similar problems with the Xbox 360 version of GTA4 on my set, night-time was all but unplayable. The solution I stumbled upon was turning up the in-game contrast setting which worked a treat. Might be worth giving it a try.

I had a similar problem with GTA on a D3000. I simply turned up the in game brightness as suggested already here by others. I don't have the auto dimming feature on though as imo it's too imprecise and darkens things too much.

You can turn off the auto light sensor on the w4000 in Settings - Features - Light Sensor OFF.

I also have the 40W4000 and found the night missions very dark. I have the light sensor off in the TV settings and then adjusted the colour, contrast and brightness in the Game Display settings - looks just fine now.

the game is far too dark, its a well known problem. try gauging your tv's black performance on a game other than gtaIV......
