Wheelstand Pro Review

EDIT: FURTHER TO THIS POST, I'VE BOUGHT A WHEELSTAND PRO AND ADDED A REVIEW BELOW

Looking to buy either the Wheelstand Pro or the recently released RennSport Wheel Stand
by Fanatec. Both cost around £100 in G25 mode.

They both seem to do the same thing and I know of a few people here on these forums with the Wheelstand Pro, but has anyone got the Fanatec stand?

Review of fanatec here on youtube

YouTube - Review of Fanatec RennSport Wheel Stand with Logitech G25 (HD)

My preference is probably for the Wheelstand Pro system as it looks like it could fold away a little smaller the Fanatec model. Also it looks like they aren't shipping the gear shift adapter the Fanatec just yet.

re: Wheelstand Pro Review

That's the problem, if I had a spare room for all my PS3 stuff, I'd have a playseat or equivalent straight away

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Okay, after making the decision to buy a Wheelstand Pro, the packaged arrived today and I thought I'd write a quick review and show pictures of what's in the box and how it all fits together.

wheel stand pro

Mine was bought with the G25 attachment which costs £99. I paid via Paypal which made the order process very quick. The order was placed on the 12th with delivery today, 20th, seems quite slow as it was held in Customs for several days, I have heard some people getting theirs quicker, guess it's the luck of the draw, or your shipping coincides with the weekend.

1. The package was a little damaged and seems to have had extra tape placed around the box. The contents had minimal bubble wrap and did seem to rattle around in the generous box, thankfully no damage.

2. The stand comes already well assembled, small pack of bolts, allen keys and a spanner, plus the G25 bracket and additional bolts.

3. The instructions seem very clear and simple, nothing too complicated to get confused with.

4. What’s initially impressed me was the solidity and strength of all the materials, no plastics or flimsy construction. All steel sections/tubes were either powder coated or chrome plated. The clamps are very strong and from initial tightening, seem to hold the vertical post very secure.

5. Setting up the G25 pedals was very easy and from past studies of other versions of the stand, they have now provided a metal plate to fix the pedals to the frame. It seems to work and is simple and effective.

6. Clamping the steering wheel to the top plate requires the gear shift plate to be placed on top before clamping. The bolds provided didn't seem to be used here and all that secures the wheel to the top plate is the wheel clamps themselves, so far, it seems to be okay.

7. The gear shift clamps don't extend far enough up to clamp to the plate. They have provided 2 bolts to go through the underside of the plate and into the gear shift. This works well, but immediately you start playing the bolts start to rattle around and prove a distraction. The solution, some electrical tape over the clamp bolts to stop them rattling.

8. The Wheelstand Pro provides plenty of adjustment for all types of chairs and positions. In operation there seem very little movement from the vertical post and it would suggest that it could take some serious FFB to make it move at all. One thing that did distract me at first was the resonance and vibration through the frame when the FFB kicked in whilst hitting a heavy kerb in GT5P, something that I got use to quite quickly so not really any concern.

9. Overall, thoroughly recommend getting this if, like me, you need the space and don’t do racing games every day, yet need something serious setup when you do. It seems expensive for what you get, but then again, most consumables for the PS3 are!
Score 9 out 10,

re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Thanks Dave, I can tell you enjoyed every second of setting it up and testing it.

Still amazed how everyone says it's so sturdy.

Do you have to have the gear change on the right though?

Do i need to start worrying in TT's from now on?

Nick, after 20 mins on the reverse track I'd beaten my previous best time albeit by only .002 still, looks like it could be a winner.

Just need to find a more suitable chair to seat at, the dining chair I used was all wrong

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

I have an early version of the Wheelstand Pro for the G25. Sounds like they've made some worthwhile improvements. Mine is covered in cable ties and tape to keep the thing together. I do find that it is a touch top heavy, but this isn't a problem while racing as I counter-balance with my feet.

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

That looks really good and is something that has got me nearer to buying a wheel as setup is key. Although im still torn between the Driving force pro rather than G25 on price. How much better is it? Altough the clutch for me is quite a point to consider. Looks really good.

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Spending £90 on one of these when the GT Pro Wheel is £65 is difficult to swallow.

£155 for the two doesn't sound so bad but I just can't accept the stand should cost that much when you see the pictures.

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Do you have to mount the gear stick on the right hand side of the wheel?

I prefer mine on the left and am considering purchasing one of these or the Fanatec.

Thanks

Davidg1230, The 2 bolts go through the top plate from underneath (7th photo in your post) , through the gearshift mounting plate, then into the bottom of the wheel. There's no need to use the clamps.

R4z you can use left or right, it makes no difference.

I got one of these stands this week along with a G25 and have to say I'm very pleased with it. There's very little movement when in use and it doesn't slide forwards on the carpet. The only problem is as David said the gearshift clamps rattle quite a bit, but that's easy to fix so I would recommend it to anybody.

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

I ordered one of these last friday and it arrived last night so good timing really. Once set up I was amazed how solid the thing is. The thing that took the longest was getting the steering wheel mounted onto the G25 faceplate which was a bit fidly as the screws mount in from the bottom!!

Theres some forward/backward movement on the pole but so far i havent noticed it being a problem and theres very little left/right movement. If i was being critical maybe a few more cable ties wouldn't go amiss but really they are pennies to buy.

Compared to my previous tables it is out of this world and i have already beaten my previous lap times on suzuka S10 race!!

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Just received my Wheelstand Pro and unfortunately they haven't included any instructions, bolts, allen keys, zip ties etc...I've got just the frame itself and that shifter mount.

Would somebody be kind enough (Davidg1230 maybe? ) to post a larger res photo of the instructions please? I know its probably quite straight forward but i always end up putting stuff on the wrong way!

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

No problem Skidu, will post a little later Your biggest problem is lack of bolts, M8's I think

EDIT: there you go, good luck with finding the screws, do you think they've fallen out of the box, or not included?

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

I have moved my G25 onto my Rino Seat Race Seat now for PC & PS3 use and intend to use the Wheelstand for the 360 - I have the 360 fixing plate bought at the same time.

The only thing is I can`t see how to fix it to the stand - I can`t find my instructions at the moment either. I`m a bit rubbish at DIY type stuff too so what is obvious to others is a mechanical mystery to me

Anybody has any pics / copy of the instructions for the 360 wheel fixing ?

Cheers

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Thanks for the swift reply David, I'm pretty sure they just haven't been included because there's no other extras either. Might just pop down local DIY shop and try and pickup some M6/M8 bolts ( judging from this review ehsia.com - my stuff » Blog Archive » Wheel Stand Pro) it uses M6 bolts in the base so i assume its the same for the wheel - will find out soon enough.

Edit: Just received an email back from Sebastian from WSP - h'll ship the missing parts on Monday

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

For those of you who have bought a Wheel stand as opposed to a gaming seat, do you think it was the right decision?

I'm assuming that the wheel stand solution is a lot less cash. I am worried though - looking at the pictures of the wheel stands, that the gear stick won't be in an optimal position. In a real car the gear stick is usual down and to the left (in the UK any), and I assume this would also be the case with a gaming seat. However, is it not the case that the stearin wheel will not feel in such a natural position on a wheel stand as it will be up next to the stearing wheel itself.

The above is just my thoughts from seeing photos. I would love some feedback from people who've actually got hands on experience.

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Thinking of getting one of these too as the old coffee table just doesn't cut the mustard anymore.

It does look very top heavy though. I am guessing the base of the stand is VERY heavy to keep everything in place?

Also: how easy is it to take the wheel/pedal/knob off the stand? I may not be one of those who keeps it permanently attached.

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Yeah pretty sure u can have shifter on the left.

Got a question to wheelstand pro owners, having just ordered the G25 to use with PC and PS3 and will be getting a wheelstand pro soon, the seat i intend to use with it is 17.75 inches off the ground, will this be about right for the wheelstand?
What kind of adjustments can be made?
Cheers

Having just ordered the G25 with the £99 Play.com offer, I'm now looking for a decent way to mount it. I know that some sort of stable mounting system is a must.

I'd love a proper cockpit/racing seat type setup but just don't have the space so this looks like the way to go. I'd second Jocky's request for people who own one to post their experiences.

Specifically:

* How compact is it when folded?
* How stable is it in use with the G25?
* What's it like with typical lounge seats? Would it work well in conjunction with a beanbag?
* 99 quid seems like a lot of cash for a basic stand (given that 'cockpit' style stands with seats start around the £200 mark) so is it worth the dosh?

Similar to what i asked above, Hope someone will come along and give us a say on how it is, does look very good tho.

EDIT, Post number 4 has a detailed view on it, defo gonna get one now, looks great. Price is a little steep tho agree on that, but if it works then it's worth it.

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Well, after trawling the web for reviews (and seeing a few on YouTube) I've bitten the bullet and ordered one.

I still think that the price is steep for what you are getting but some sort of decent fixing solution is essential for the living room IMO and I'm not going to resort to the ironing board method. Being able to store the whole stand/wheel away easily is a major consideration.

A full size cockpit/seat is out of the question until such time as I have a dedicated AV room so the WsP is clearly the one to get.

Will post my experiences once all the kit arrives and I've got it set up.

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Check out gtforums.co.uk, one of the guys there has the Wheel Stand Pro and has reviewed it. They are planning on doing a controller and setup comparison i think at some point

Yes - the review is exactly the same as Davidg1230s so I'd assume he's ac_cobra on that site

Comments on the followups from people who already have one seem to be pretty positive.

I wonder will this Rennsport unit prompt price cuts due to competition? Would be typical

Re: Wheelstand Pro Review

Having just bought a G25 from Play for £99, I need a stand.. I was planning on going down the 'cheap' route but now I have accepted the price of the WSP, I am more than tempted.

Before I order, is there any reason NOT to go for the WSP?

Jon
