GT5 damage video

I kind of have mixed feelings about this video. It may be that damage is only on certain cars or can be turned on / off / scaleable etc. Hopefully more news will come soon from Gamescom.

I'm not impressed if damage is only available on the race cars.

My god that guys crap at driving

Damage is looking spot on though. Hated the Forza 2 damage, it was alright when you hit something once, then the panel just didnt really change again..

Look good, dont care if its only on race cars.. its only what it looks like and you soon get bored of trying to smash it up as much as possible.

Re: GT5 damage video

i agree with the majority view, i expect that level of damage to be restricted to the rally cars, nascars and maybe a select few models. It's a shame but i spose it's to be expected. It must be a huge amount of work but you would have thought they could have created a standard sort of damage modeling like with Codemasters and GRiD. Maybe it wouldn't be as detailed as they want or as good as the damage on the apparantly restricted few cars. But at least visually all cars would have damage to some degree. Hell, maybe this is what they are doing!! Give us some info PD!!!!!!

Oh and hopefully it has an effect on the performance!!!

It looks fantastic, & as humanfish says, hopefully it will effect performance as well as deduct money from your winnings for repair bills. I guess we have to wait with anticipation for 24th-27th September now.

Re: GT5 damage video

I'm getting a bit nervous regarding crash damage.
Not wanting to really coment without all the details but surely with the game being years late (not weeeks or months) you would have thought they would have got this damage stuff sorted by release.

From the videos, there does not seem to be much deformation, no broken lights/glass etc. Having only some cars damageable looks a bit off when an undamageable car crashes into it and gets away unscathed whilst damaging the other car.

I'm hoping my initial feelings are totally wrong though...

Re: GT5 damage video

The damage model looks good but it is lacking in the areas which Lucas Buck mentioned above. From what we can see in the videos the damage also seems to have no impact on the handling of the car. They have lots of work to do before the damage modelling can match Forza.

But how do you know its set for cosmetic damage just like in forza ie damage doesnt effect teh driving??

that video's main purpose is to show the games damage physics, not its effect on handling etc. a high collision like that and the car would be crawling. they wanted to show parts of teh car hanging and swinging about at high speed.

Re: GT5 damage video

Hopefully full damage will be on all cars come release.

Looks good so far.

I noticed from the clip that the car's performance didn't seem that badly effected, still kept up with the undamaged Evo. Still early days so far, hopefully there will be a full on damage option that properly effects performance.

Re: GT5 damage video

hopefully it will be a feature that can be turned off. i use the inside car view so wont be able to see any damage on the car im driving. and im more interested in the track than the other cars most of the time so im not going to be staring at the damage on the other cars. i can see why people might want the feature but to me its just a waste of development time....

end of the day if you can drive the race car properly then you wont have any damage! and who wants to be 2 or 3hrs into an endurance race and then end up wrecking the car so completely wasting all that hard work. its one step of realism too far..

Re: GT5 damage video

I agree if it's just cosmetic damage..it is rather pointless.

But with Full damage modeling even with the in car or bumper view, you will be aware of the damage as the cars handling and performance will be affected which will mean you will have to drive around it or limp back to the pits for repairs.

Proper damage adds realism to the racing experience and punishes poor or stupid and wreckless driving.

Also from an in car view you may see broken windscreens, doors missing/pushed in and damaged hoods and front panels.

I would guess that damage can be turned off.

Me.

I don't see how anyone wanting a realistic game could enjoy it knowing your invulnerable. Makes it much more tense knowing that can happen and less of a formality bringing the car home.

How come most people you play in forza 2 have only cosmetic damage on? lets wait and see before jumping into conclusion about gt5's damage model. like i said, how do you know that the demo shown only had cosmetic damage on?

Re: GT5 damage video

doesnt bother me either way about damage, but no game has proper damage, considering in reall life a crash at 30mph could knackered a car up, never mind one at 60mph or above, so if it did have proper damage then u play online and coming upto first corner then someone breacks hard infront of u or hits into side of yr car or slams u from behind if life like damage was implemented thats game over for u, to me damage is overrated id much more prefer to see weather cycles while racing and day night cycles while racing

No game? play GTR EVO, GTR2, Rfactor. that has real life damage. you crash at 30mph and your race is over.

One of the main criticisms of GT has always been the lack of damage/crashes

Can you imagine playing a FPS or a flight sim where everytime you got shot, you didn't lose any health or your plane did not get damaged - you just slowed down for 5 seconds. That would be useless!

And since GT5 has been in development for at least 3 or 4 years, why can't we expect to have Damage modelling and weather cycles while racing and day night cycles while racing?

I'm sure there is a quote along the lines of, if you will accept mediocrity, you willl get mediocrity.

Re: GT5 damage video

Read this on Ign regarding damage

"First off, Kazunori confirmed that not all the cars in Gran Turismo 5 will have damage models -- only select sets of cars will feature damage support. No official word yet on what those car sets are, but hopefully we'll have more on that soon.

Speaking of cars, Kazunori wasn't willing to let the total number of cars slip just yet, but there were a few other points of interest to hold us over. First, Porsche will very likely not appear in Gran Turismo 5. Kazunori was disappointed by this fact, but according to our interview, Porsche already signed an exclusive deal for a different game and it's highly unlikely the brand will appear in Polyphony Digital's upcoming hit. Perhaps Porsche will show up in a future GT title. "

I still can't believe that they haven't fixed one of the fundamental problems that I have with the GT franchise.. I call it "the force field"! Its like every car/object has an invisible force field around it.. So you never actually make contact.

When 'nudging' other cars, I just never felt that I was making contact with them... Look at the 2nd video at 0:18.. The car hits the barrier, but its about 6-12" short..

Perhaps I am being over critical, but I have always felt this about GT, right from the start!

I would like to at least see damage on cars driving side by side, hitting each other and actually seeing wing mirrors breaking off when you hit them and show it happen at the same time. Then when you go inside the car you don't have a wing mirror on your view. This would be cool. This force field effect is not realistic so lets hope come release they have sorted this out.

I'm guessing damage will affect all cars in a particular race. Who would want to race in a car capable of taking damage vs a car that doesn't take damage?

Did GT5 get a release date yet?

Damage looks ok to me although it does look a bit odd that the bonnet in that first clip doesn't fly off after a bit - would have thought it would be ripped off by the wind with it up like that and travelling that fast.

If you use the in-car view, isn't having the hood up going to sort of ruin the race, due to not being able to see a thing?!
