Is my PS3 on its last legs?

I was playing Tiger Woods the other day and as I got towards the end of the 18 holes the loading times really started slowing down. The game then froze completely when trying to load the 18th hole.

I switched off and on and the PS3 was then not even recognising there was a disc. The system seemed really hot so I left it for a while then tried again. I got a few minutes of play before freezing again, then each time I restarted, I was getting less and less play before freezing until eventually the disc was not recognised again.

I then experienced very similar problems watching a blu ray yesterday – film froze after about an hour, I then restarted where I left off and got about another 15 mins – restarted and got another 10 mins, then 5 mins etc etc until eventually it would not realise there was a disc inside.

The PS3 does seem to be getting very hot but then that might just be normal – I’ve never checked how hot it is when games/films are running fine.

So I ran through a CD lens cleaner and managed to watch the rest of the film but I have a bad feeling that this will be a short term fix and fear the problem will return.

Has anyone experienced similar problems?

My PS3 (launch 60GB, purchased Oct ’07) is out of warranty so I really hope the blu ray drive hasn’t failed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You probably have lots of dust in there, 2 years worth, plus I had my BR drive fail with in 100 hrs of use, not uncommon..
