Re: Do people still buy DVD players or even DVD's

I read somewhere the other day that DVDs are still outselling Blue-Ray 4-1. It would seem the masses aren't as far along as you and DVDs for £3 in Asda are hard to beat . I do know what you mean about video tapes though because as soon as I watched a DVD I gave my VCR away and sold my entire video collection at a boot sale.

Re: Do people still buy DVD players or even DVD's

I work in Currys and I can tell you we're still selling far more DVD players than Blu-ray. Nontheless sales of BD have risen dramatically since HD-DVD was discontinued

Re: Do people still buy DVD players or even DVD's

I've never bought anything else.
VHS movies were too expensive for the quality they offered and I don't know what a 30 euro BR movie has to offer me that I don't have with the same movie on DVD for 5 euro.

Re: Do people still buy DVD players or even DVD's

Despite BR appearing, they are still a high quality medium, and they are so cheap these days it is a really good way of building up a collection. Especially with films/series that don't 'need' a HD quality picture. For instance, comedy (eg Black Books, Seinfeld)

Same with CDs, I still buy loads.

Re: Do people still buy DVD players or even DVD's

Don`t have HD-DVD or BR but still using DVD and buying.

Currently have 670 Discs. Until BR comes down to the price of a modern
upscalng player and HD capable 1080p screens also come down in price
I`ll stick with what I`ve got (if I`m not in the sod by that time)

Well how about significantly superior picture and sound quality? Now you know. The cost has nothing to do with the quality on the disc. But if you have the system capable of presenting the extra definition on Blu-ray, it's a no brainer.
I haven't bought a regular DVD for over a year.

Well maybe with 10.000 euro worth of equipment, but I doubt the average family with a sub 1.000 euro television and at best, if any, a 500 euro home cinema installation will see or hear much difference.
And those people still represent more than 90% of the population.

Last time I looked at a BR disc on a Samsung HD set I was disgusted by the artificial looking image, far from the cinema-like image I have at home.

To make the most of the above you also need superior quality eyesight and a larger than average screen. Sitting ten feet away from my 42" screen I don't see much of a difference with my ancient eyes.

Having dipped my toes in the water with an HD DVD player I am quite happily still buying SD discs as I don't intend to buy a Blu-ray player at the moment

Re: Do people still buy DVD players or even DVD's

I bought 'Doctor Who - The Five Doctors' today on DVD. Okay I'm a geeky Doctor Who fan but how long will it be before stuff like that is on blu-ray? I'm guessing it will be many years. DVD has a long life ahead of it.

From the magazine HDReview:

According to the British Video Association, 250 million DVDs were sold in the UK last year (up 29 million from 2006), whereas the Blu-ray disk Association recently celebrated selling 2 million disks in the whole of Europe.

Even if those two million Blu-ray disk sales were in the UK alone and not in Europe that would still be less than 1%. Still a long way to go.

Re: Do people still buy DVD players or even DVD's

IMO the best thing that happened to Home Cinema was NOT BluRay but up scaling/up converting image processors and the very significant enhancement they bring to standard definition dvd.

I sit 12 feet from our almost 10 ft diagonal projection screen and achieve all of the WOW I care for. I just watched an old American film (standard def) called My Geisha shot in the 60s in CinemaScope and through out I thought - "WOW what a wonderful and very near HD image my upscaler has given me!"

I sit about 15 ft. from our 56in 1080p HD flat screen TV and achieve the same WOW.

All with standard definition 480p dvd after the player's image processor and software does its' up scaling/converting "magic".

Maybe my old eyeballs are too old to appreciate the minimal difference and maybe some folk feel they are enhanced being able to boast of paying a lot more for near quality but the status of having leading edge technology gadgets.

Thank you, I'll wait for 3D OR til the rediculous prices for BR players, PC drives/burners and discs come down significantly.

I am in a minority that believes that before long image processors/up scalers will be powerful enough and feature rich enough to take most any video image and analyze it and then project it as HD or 3D or whatever the current "craze" demands.
Sorry - I rambled way to long here.
Blessings to All whether you are 1080p or 720p!

Well, when you see hd-dvd or blu-ray in action there's no denying the quality, viewing on an 84"screen it's a sight to behold,sd is good but lacks a certain oomph to the picture imho

Hi
Yes it probably is on a 84" screen but then not everyone can afford that amount of technology (screen + projector), and are confined to our upscaling players and smaller displays.
