What would you do with your old Vinyl Records ?

I've got a collection of old vinyl records going back to my late teens, and i'm unsure as to what to do with them.
Some of them were rare pieces in their day, but hardly worth anything these days.
I know you can get turntables to convert them into mp3 and stuff, but i'm not too sure if i'm bothered in doing that.

It looks like the only reason i'm keeping them is sentiment.

What would you do ?
Take them to a boot sale and get what you can ?
Chuck them out ?
Get a turntable and convert to mp3 ?

Any thought's anyone ?

Re: What would you do with your old Vinyl Records ?

Have a USB Turntable here at home and have moved some over to MP3 for my Father (He is a former record dealer and collector) and he has been selling a lot of records, test pressings etc on ebay lately getting quite a good price.

The idea is to find out what they're worth, if you have a lot then i'd get yourself a copy of the latest Record Collector price guide:
Record Collector | Rare Record Price Guide

Find out what they're worth and then see wether they're worth listing with a reserve on ebay or such, or you could sell them at a boot sale, but you'd probably have more luck finding a buyer on the internet.

"Records and Relics" in Blackpool buy a lot in - especially the rarer stuff.

Isn't there a similar shop/stall in the Coin Exchange in Manchester?

I ended up giving a lot of mine away, just keeping certain rare discs and the sentimental ones.

Not looked at many online myself:
rare record & compact disc price guides
Seems to have been updated this year so that might be worth looking at, if you have some that you want checking out - obviously if there are not too many, if you have some you think might be worth a bit then I can look them up in the 2009 edition of record collector price guide for you.

Well- perhaps naively- I'd listen to them. I've just been enjoying a Police and a Roxy Music album whilst the Mrs watched The Apprentice. If you want to sell them you'l find a market but you may ultimately regret it.

You'd be suprised what some of them might fetch.

All my vinyl is 2 step ukg and some of the rarer ones go for £50 quid plus.

I had a second copy of Hobsons choice ( A garage classic) and I got 75 quid for it on ebay.

It's worth having a little look at what some of yours go for.

Way to go, no question IMHO.

I lived my teenage years during the 80s and have lots of picture disks/coloured vinyls etc-I used to collect them like it was going out of fashion and the 80s was the time for these types of releases!

Anyway, when we moved SWMBO realised how many disks I/we both had and she bought me a USB turntable and what a fantastic gift it turnedout to be!

Forgetting the picture disk/coloured vinyl aspect, we have a lot of stuff that just never made it to CD (one hit wonders etc) and it's so good to be able to hear them again sometimes when a nostalgia moment takes me/us.

I would definately recommend the turntable route.

Re: What would you do with your old Vinyl Records ?

I nearly gave all mine away about 9/10 years ago but so many people saw them and said they would love a collection like it that i bought a new TT. I do listen to them now and again and that's when i'm glad i didn't get rid of them.

Re: What would you do with your old Vinyl Records ?

I did listen to some of them a while back, and i couldn't believe the difference to CD. They were a much warmer, involving and less clinical sound than CD.
I'm still not too sure on taking the turntable to mp3 route.

After having a little look at some of the links posted here, on prices and collector's etc, i need to remind myself at what i've actually got. So a trip to the loft is needed.

I just might have some little nugget's up there

I cant remember wether they have like reference numbers on them. That would just be an easier way to search.

Re: What would you do with your old Vinyl Records ?

I recently tidied my loft and found my LP & single collection (several hundred) that I started in the early 70's, what got to me was how many I also had on cassette, CD, Mini-Disk and now MP3 (I passed on the 8 track experience)

Re: What would you do with your old Vinyl Records ?

I have an older brother that would give me his vinyl as he replaced it with CD (about 150 LP's all told, I'm guessing). Now he regrets it and I'm reaping the rewards of his folly.
If you care at all about sound quality, keep them and take care of them; if convenience is more important to you (how sad), sell them....there's still a huge market out there for them (myself included).

Re: What would you do with your old Vinyl Records ?

The reason for me starting this thread is that i'm doing a car boot sale soon, and my vinyl collection was considering on taking itself along, hence my questions.
After reading the replies on here, my collection has now changed it's mind, and doesn't want to go to the boot sale.
However, that is the only option i'm not undertaking. Going to a collector, converting to mp3, or keeping are still on the cards.

You might find that you don't want to keep everything but hold on to a smaller amount with more significance. I'd at least have a sift through and see what has a sentimental or other attachment. This is not the same as value- I have records I would hold onto long after I would have sold the most valuable ones in the collection.

Re: What would you do with your old Vinyl Records ?

That's a good point. Sentiment is very different to value.

A good sort through is needed. It's not a huge amount if i remember, a couple of hundred or so. With a mixture of LP's, 7", and 12" singles.

Thinking back, i seem to remember taking some 7" singles to a boot sale years ago. Guess what i'm thinking right now...............
Yep, maybe i shouldn't have done

Sadly picture discs have to be rare and in high demand to get huge amounts, test pressings can fetch a few hundred etc, but it's the really rare high demand stuff that fetches the big figures.

The most my Dad has got for any was around £400 for a Sisters of Mercy test pressing, which he still has one more to sell!
