InDesign

Hello,

I am currently thinking of setting up an e-zine but have no experience in Desktop publishing or design!

I did my research and it was a toss up between Quark and Indesign. I opted for Indesign based on the numerous tutorials out there and was naive enough to think I would be able to create something good just by these tutorials alone.

After many an hour watching, copying, tweeking I am still no closer in creating the layout alone.

I was wondering if there was anyone on here with experience of InDesign who would be prepared to help, I would be willing to re-imburse you for your time should you agree to help.

Anybody interested please respond or send me a PM.

Thanks

Re: InDesign

I work in graphics and print. We use Indesign all the time.
You did right not to go with Quark - it's outdated and expensive and they're so many compatiilty issues its not worth going into.

You're doing an e-zine so you shouldn't have a problem with the following BUT if ever you want to go to print read on...
If you're sending a printer an Indesign file make sure you give them a HiRes, Print pdf with fonts embedded. If they ask for the native Indesign file you must ensure the printer has all the fonts and send them the 'Live' file.
However.... if the printer asks for the Indesign file with 'outlined' (or vectorised) fonts be very very wary!! if you outline the fonts in an Indesign file you run the risk of losing formats such as underlining and text boxes!!
The only way around this is to create all these lines by hand which is an absolute ball ache, especially if text is amended and then reflows. This would mean having to amend & check every line individuallly.
A printer wouldn't do this for you unless they were a) being paid b) stupid

Use this thread for any Indesign queries you may have - I'm sure someone will help.
Also try the Adobe forums as there will be an Indesign specific one there. + many other graphic App forums online if you search. (don't use Google forums tho')

Re: InDesign

Another user here

Design work takes a lot of practice and usually a lot of experience. It's another one of those jobs where it looks easy to do and people try and have a play and then realise there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

As said above, pop any questions in here and we'll help as much as we can

Re: InDesign

Agreed, posting "does anyone know anything about Indesign" or any other graphic software package FTM is like posting "does anyone know owt about rocket science"
Been using these apps for years now and still finding issues and new uses for them.
Post a query and we'll see if we can answer

We'll invoice via PM (only joking)

This man is a saint. In just 24 hours and 20 e.mails (sorry!) Danny has created all the templates I should need, they look superb and I cannot thank him enough.

Cheers Danny....................
