Well I spoke to the Fraud Dept who told me that the card had initially received a 25p
"test" hit, followed by the £700 charge that followed and that she had seen the name of the initial 25p charge retailer crop up a good few times.
Anyway, she agreed with me that it was a fraudulent transaction and agreed to refund the amount immediately.
I was thinking earlier where it could have happened and I do remember my last night in Spain in Feb I took my relatives out for a meal to say to for putting me up for the week and I remember that I handed my card over to the Eastern European waitress who then wandered off to the back of the restaurant to swipe the card. She came back after about 30 seconds and said
"I need your PIN number"....
I obviously replied that wasn't an option and that I would enter it manually, but now I think about it, the card was out of my sight for about 30 seconds or so and I reckon that's when it could well have been skimmed/cloned/whatever it is they do!....
Moral of the story? Never let your card out of your sight.
