Giving "Thanks" is it really that hard ?

I've just popped into a section of the forum where a long standing Member has asked a certain question to which an even more prolific member gave him/her an answer. the first "member" wasn't happy with the reply so he/she questioned it ,then the long serving member produced at raft of information to help the Guy/Gal .....to which he got ..quote "Thanks very much"

why not just hit the thanks button

P.s the guy/gal in question has something like ..given 7 received 47

is the "THANKS " system a farce ?

For many of us fossils, the Thanks button is a bit new fangled and confusing. I confess I don't use it often- 3 of the thanks I've given were when I was going for the quote button when drunk.

Re: Giving "Thanks" is it really that hard ?

I've never really held much stock in it, I don't know exactly what purpose it is meant to serve. As for the actual giving of "thanks" I'd say it means more to take the time to write the words than it does to simply click the button? Maybe do both when it comes to advice...

People seem to mostly give thanks out just for having someone agree with them...in that case it saves a post and is perfectly useful because it doesn't take up much space on the page.

I'm almost 100% certain that I have not been useful 276 times here!

Plus Ed's "thanks" carry much more weight than mine, they are a thing to be cherished and I strive for the day that I might recieve one!

Re: Giving "Thanks" is it really that hard ?

It maybe under the circumstances superfluous to requirement but you know I quite like it, somebody's made an effort at the end of the day. How often do we see the reverse where people feel they have a divine right to get an answer to something and can't even be bothered to hit the Thanks button.

maybe we should also have an "annoyed at you" button...that would be really useful to let people know when they are being out of order...myself included!

Ah, but just by clicking thanks, people's post counts don't go up do they and we know how important they are!

Implementing a pillock button too would give the system more credibility IMHO.

That's a working class version of the button I just suggested! I have first dibs on that suggestion and should receive all the thanks it absolutely deserves.

Not so sure I like my new promotion to "Veteran", I always thought "Prominent Member" had more of a ring to it

I think it's disgusting that the system discriminates against schizophrenics by not allowing you to thank yourself.

Speaking of poor grammar, have you ever made a sign and noticed a glaring mistake only after you have finished it? And if so did you have a temper tantrum?

Re: Giving "Thanks" is it really that hard ?

oh, during the week I pester electronics manufacturers around the world to sell me their unwanted electronic components no longer needed for production. Then I resell them to other manufacturers around the world who can use them on their circuit boards.

At the weekend I help out at the car dismantlers yard which my Old Man and Brothers own.

I was actually excited that someone might be taking a slight interest in my sad, pathetic little life...but no, all they wished to do was swat me down like an annoying gnat.

Re: Giving "Thanks" is it really that hard ?

I think it is partly a farce, tbh.

Whilst I like to think I have way more than the average user's knowledge overall (my advanced age and the fact that I was a radio Ham is the reason for saying that), the truth is I learn loads from what I'd probably class as "snot nosed kids"

It's all good

I like to give advice and am happy to do so
Whether it's right or wrong is a different matter, so it's pretty much a case of you "live or die by the sword".
Here, I don't think "thanks" matters that much. People think what they think and seeing as thanks aren't handed around that much generally these days, I don't see it as a major problem.

It is a nice token though, I guess

Yeah it was an absolute nightmare but eventually got the licenses to start dismantling. It has really helped the business through what could have been a tough patch. Both that side of the business and the bodyshop has picked up nicely thanks! Got almost 100 cars in the yard and hoping to double that amount over the next year.

Re: Giving "Thanks" is it really that hard ?

I was reliably informed that if I reached 1,000 thanks, I would get a special little animated avatar with a thumbs up.

I've spent the last 3 years agreeing with everybody and backing them up, to ensure I reached the target.

What did I get - nothing!

Re: Giving "Thanks" is it really that hard ?

I like to use the thanks button rather than add another post, unless I feel it warrants some extra comments as well, in which case I click the thanks and say so in the reply.

I do wish there was a 'Oh not again' or maybe 'just let it drop' button for those tedious repeated threads like 'How do I remove black bars from my BluRays' (and the ensuing arguement for and against OAR) or whether to use CIH or CIA in the projector sections (followed by Gary Lightfoot, Pecker and Jeff arguing for page after page ).

BTW, how many posts is it to become a 'veteran'? I was quite surprise to become 'senior' a while back.....I've never been senior at anything.
