Any reason why DVD cases are bigger than CD cases?
It would help me with storage if they put DVDs in the same sized cases as CDs. Is there any reason why they continue putting them in the larger sized cases?

So people didn't confuse CD with DVD. CD sized cases can be bought now.

The first DVD's that I bought were jewel cases before the amaray style came out.

Re: Any reason why DVD cases are bigger than CD cases?
As above...
Probably has something to do with marketing too, a new style case gives Joe Buyer something new to influence his decision, products sell on how they look.
Notice how PS2 games came in DVD style cases instead of the fatter CD type boxes of the PS1.
It's all about bringing out something new.
Plus there is more space for artwork and detailing and maybe another point is that it makes it harder to shoplift...

To ease the transition from VHS cases? Wouldn't seem right having a movie in a jewel case after being used to those big, fat video cases.

Brilliant They are the same(ish) height as a VHS so if you have shelving that had VHS's on the DVDs could go alongside/replace them and the shelf spacing would look OK.

It's not fair, I don't have any VHS sized shelving

Re: Any reason why DVD cases are bigger than CD cases?
Years ago, I got a wooden hanging shelf unit specially made for VHS tapes. It has last about 20 years now. Now it has DVD and I have had Blu Ray in there but it left to much wasted space above so I moved them. Do to so many DVD's, I have put many discs into 6 and 8 disc cases and got into custom covers.

Please do not get me started on wasteful packaging. Have you seen the size of a Nintendo DS game case compared to the size of the game memory card!
Ian.

Re: Any reason why DVD cases are bigger than CD cases?
At least Blu-Ray cases aren't as big as DVD cases, and they're all blue and have that lovely silver embossed logo on the top as well. Lovely! But then again, when I buy DVDs and I've made sure they play properly, the first thing to go is the plastic case.
So yes, it is wasteful.

Yes but the answer there is to make the DS cart as big as the packaging, rather then the size of a postage stamp which is easily lost. A 6 year old with a lost nintendog is not an experience I wish to go through again.

PC software boxes is pretty bad too. It is not just the retail packaging but also what they are put in at the supplier. I ordered a SD card and it came in a big jiffy bag that had to be folded in half to get through the letterbox.

Re: Any reason why DVD cases are bigger than CD cases?
I remember buying Duke Nukem 3D back in the 90s and it came in a huge cardboard box (at least 2 inches deep) and about the size of an A4 piece of paper. Only contained a CD case with the game and a small manual, the rest was just cardboard inserts to fill it out, which bright spark thought of that!?
Then again, once a few start doing it then the rest have to follow for sake of making their product stand out.
