Where to buy Absinthe?

Hey,

Anyone know where the best place is to buy Absinthe? (tesco, asda, morrisons etc)

My local asda doesn't sell it (but if someone can confirm they do I'll visit another local 1) and my local tesco only do 1 bottle, the green 1 at 45% vol which is just under £18 a bottle.

Re: Where to buy Absinthe?

I don't think any off the major supermarkets sell the stuff at the higher alcohol levels, would be seen as bad publicity. You'll have to check out all your local off licences, usually one of the locals will have it.

Why not just save yourself time and stab yourself in the eyes with a fork until you can no longer see?

Re: Where to buy Absinthe?

Not false, just depends what one you buy.

I'm looking for legal absinthe at about 45% (though truth be told if I could buy the 85% one I would lol).

You can buy it with woodworm or something, that's the real stuff witch can cause haloosinationssss (ye i know...sp)

Might see what I can get online

Re: Where to buy Absinthe?

For what it's worth, I brought a really good decanter of Absinthe back from Prague last time I went. If you drink it properly it actually tastes quite nice.
You need:

Absinthe
A short straw
Box of matches
Shot glass
Sugar spoon
sugar

Absinthe in the shot glass and sugar on the sugar spoon. Dip the sugar into the absinthe and soak it through. Light it with a match and let it dissolve through the sugar spoon into the absinthe. Drink the lot quickly through the short straw.

You get the heat of the absinthe and the strength but it brings out the liquorice taste of the drink.

Lovely! (and you'll still get paralytic )

Edit: This one looks decent

Double edit: I found this about the 'Bohemian Absinthe Ritual' - everytime I've been to Prague and drank Absinthe though I've never used the iced water

A modern travesty

Today, modern absinthes are often marketed in conjunction with the so-called Bohemian absinthe ritual. This is not a traditional method, but a modern innovation inspired by the success of flaming sambuca and such like. A shot of absinthe is poured into a glass, and a teaspoonful of sugar is dipped into it. The alcohol soaked sugar is set alight and allowed to burn until it bubbles and caramelises. The spoon of melted sugar is then plunged into the absinthe and stirred in, which usually sets the absinthe itself alight.
Ice water is then poured in, dousing the flames. This method, has become increasingly popular, especially since it was shown in the film “Moulin Rouge”, but is a historical travesty, and would have horrified any Belle Epoque absintheur.

Re: Where to buy Absinthe?

The last time I bought Absinthe I got a bottle of sebour from tescos' but I have to say I prefer the parisian Absinthe, la-fee is good tho I dont like the bohemian stuff, seems a waste of perfectly good booze burning it. the perisian you drip water over a sugar cube to louch it tastes nice (ish).

Try here La Fee Absinthe

or here Absinthe available to buy online now from Sebor

Re: Where to buy Absinthe?

Only place I have seen it in the UK was behind a couple of different bars, a m8 bought a bottle from the pub when drunk and I had it for about 2 years until I gave it away, it was the green absinthe and it was 60% so you might want to have a look if you are in a bar and you might get the strong stuff.

I got one with an 81% alcohol content which had strict instructions not to drink neat or near an ignition source.

Apart from those, ive only ever seen it online.

While youre buting it online, theres also the Santa Claus beer to chase it, 14% ABV

Re: Where to buy Absinthe?

wasn't the original absinthe made in casks that had a contaminate in them and it was this that caused the famed hallucnations and madness. eg. van gogh. cut his ear off then shot himself coz he went mad on the stuff? they don't make it in that fasion anymore and so no version will give you the hallucinations and madness, anymore.

Re: Where to buy Absinthe?

It was probably the dodgy chemicals they used to use to colour absinthe, back in the day.

Van Gogh had mental problems throughout his life. He was a bit partial to drinking turps, so that can't have helped much either. He only actually cut the lobe of his ear, not the whole thing. It may have happened during a seizure too.

It had something to do with a chemical found in wormwood called thujone from what I remember but I think that it was then suggested or maybe even proven that thujone has no hallucinogenic properties.

Sainsbury's sell it. Though I'm not sure how strong it is.

Had it in London last time I went drinking there. Took the dude ages as he couldn't find the spoon to use for preparing it

Cheers for the links etc guys, going to go round a few off licenses when I'm shopping tonight and see what there is around.
Not a drinker really, I just like absinthe and it's interesting to see where you can find the stuff.
