Thanks: Gave 254, Got 167 | Can a newspaper sink lower than this ?
The Scottish Sunday Express decided to celebrate the recent 18th birthdays of children who survived the Dunblane shooting massacre by printing a front page claiming they had brought shame on themselves by drinking and saying rude words in public, a luridly OTT story told in a time-honoured tabloid fashion. The newspaper has removed the week-old story from its online webpage (so I can't link it) but has refused so far to apologise for its actions. If this newspaper is similar to the weird Express papers south of the border it's the sort of loathsome rag I don't expect anyone on this Forum to buy regularly anyway but to mount an attack on children (some of whom survived serious gunshot wounds) beggars belief. It's the sort of behaviour that should see the people involved tarred and feathered and kicked out of town.

I'm gobsmacked. The dunblane shooting was one of the most upsetting tradgedies I've ever read about. To print a lurid story about the survivors is a revolting and unnecessary exploitation.
What are these people supposed to do- live like monks for the rest of their lives? Feel guilty about being alive?
Still I dont know why I'm surprised. The same newspapers that 2 years ago branded Jade Goody as 'racist scum' are now nominating her for sainthood.
Tomorrows chip paper, mate.

The press have sadly been posting stories comprising of the lowest common denominator for a long time
It must be borne in mind that this though is the same general chat who like to quote the Daily Mail and The Sun ad nauseum and write off a whole generation of 18-21 year olds as criminals, wasters and/or alcoholics

Now they've apologised for their "inappropriate" story: Sunday Express | UK News :: Dunblane: We’re sorry
though I notice the feedback option is "unavailable for this story"

Wonder what odds you would have gotten at ladbrokes in 2005 on Jacko selling out 50 dates.
In response to newspapers sinking lower, I seem to recall the sun doing a pretty good job of it nearly 20 years ago at hillsborough.

Even the sun football adverts on tv dont mention liverpol no liverpoool kits nothing, I rememeber the sun advert for their football pull out where they get fans from across the country, they threw some female liverpool fans mentioning how many league titles we have won it got changed sharpish with no reference to liverpool f.c as the club and the fans will not asscoiate itself with them and never will.

There's no such thing as bad publicity, even if you have to issue apologies after the fact.
I do not buy tabloids. They are scum journalism for the most part. But as long as the public is so obsessed with them they will always exist.
If I ever live to see the end of the tabloid newspaper then I'd be a happy man.
