Extracting audio files from a .dat file

Extracting audio files from a .dat file

I have the following file: client_sounds.dat

It is over 2GB in size and when the file properties are checked, shows no sign of being read only or restricted in any way.

I wish to extract the audio content that is in the file, which is in Ogg Vorbis format.

I have tried a tool called "Audiorip" from a command prompt, but it cannot find any audio content within the .dat file.

I have tried "Audio Extractor" but this also fails.

Yet the file clearly does have audio as it provides it for the program it originated from.

Can anyone recommend a program that will firstly allow me to view the contents of the .dat file and then extract it?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Please not that this enterprise is not in anyway a copyright infringement.

the dat file is probably an mpg. use vlcplayer which is free, open it up, use the wizard and choose transcode/save to file, the rest should be simple to figure out

The dat file contains multiple audio files in Ogg Vorbis format. However, I have discovered that later releases of the file are encrypted, which explains why I could not extract the audio.

Nova Extractor has been recommended, so I'll experiment with that and see what sort of results I get. Thanks for your input.

what did you use to record the audio? might give us a clue as to what you need to play it back with.

can you play the audio at all?

Might be able to open it using ISOBuster. Usually, used for cd/dvd images, but works with quite a few things.
