Getting rid of baby clothes. ebay or charity ?

Well, I have aload of my daughters clothes from when she was little

0 to 3 years old, most decent makes, but some george \ mataland etc

I was thinking of selling them on ebay, in groups of ages, ie 0-3 months etc.

Is it worth it, or should I just charity shop the lot ?

Its already sorted into sizes....

charity shops, freecycle (where I regularly see baby items posted and quickly "taken"), or friends/family who you think might make good use of them

Re: Getting rid of baby clothes. ebay or charity ?

Years ago (25) my mate's girl got kicked out by her mum when she had a baby and was living in a mother and baby unit (maybe social services run) If these places still exist I am sure they would gladly take the stuff from you

otherwise as said above friends/family etc or charity all though I always feel that at the charity shops the staff nick the best stuff that has been dropped off
But then I am cynical innit

It's funny you say that, I knew someone who helped at a charity shop and saw 3 people get sacked for theft, the ironic part is they were stealing stuff that wasn't even worth stealing

Charity shops often have some nice finds, most people don't know the value of a lot of Vinyl and take it down to their local record shop, a 50p LP might be worth £50 sometimes, always worth a look pointing it out to them so that they can earn more money for their causes.

on topic: I doubt it'd be worth the hassle of ebaying them unless you really needed the cash, in which case there'd be no option of charity in your mind.

Do what I do.

Take them to a car boot sale, and whats left, give to the Red Cross or Cancer Research UK on the way back.

Give them away.

For the little money you'll make for it (not sure if you need it though) it's better to give it to someone worse off than you.

We put ours to charity.
I certainly have no desire to confront the sort of people that would buy used clothes from me at a car boot sale.
Even if there's money in it for me, not interested.

Re: Getting rid of baby clothes. ebay or charity ?

The vast majority of people at car boot sales are perfectly normal people. People get bought lots of babies clothes when they have a child. Lots of it only gets worn once or often never worn at all. My partner has picked up loads of clothes that are brand spanking new (often sealed in original packaging) for next to nothing. She has also sold baby clothes there as well. Certainly at the car boot sales in my area, lots of parents with young children regualrly go and basically exchange clothes for next to nothing. I have only ever met nice, friendly, every day people there. Baby's clothes are expensive considering the length of time they get used! Car boots really help people out and can make you more money that you think. My partner did one last weekend and make £70 in a couple of hours, mainly selling clothes.

Do you think?
I'm always amazed how cheap they are, to be honest.
You can be daft and spend OTT money on 'designer' stuff, of course.
But your kids' ranges in Asda/Tesco/Matalan are laughably cheap.
Like a jacket for the price of a TV/Hifi magazine.

That's a rather snobby and dismissive comment. My wife and I buy many of our childrens clothes at boot fairs and on ebay and from the charity shop. Whats wrong with recycling them in the same way? I sell at boot fairs and its a great way to meet people and earn a few extra pennies when times are tight. What is isn't sold goes to charity on the way back. Everyones a winner.

Of course its much easier for people to simply bag up their unwanted and hand it straight to charity, and they get to lie in on Sunday mornings and not consort with us prolls.

Or maybe they just don't see the point in trying to flog a jacket/jeans/shoes that have only cost a few quid in the first place?
Then there's the cost of fuel to the carboot sale and the fees involved to be there.
Also, what do you do with your kids when you go there?
Take them with you?
No offence, but it all seems far too much hassle/expense for a potential few quid.
If it's your idea of fun though, you go for it.
I have no real desire to meet people at a car boot sale, any more than I welcome a stranger talking to me in a pub.

When your partner likes Next & Gap stuff, yes.
It all depends on how much money you have!
Even if you buy cheaper stuff, if they only wear it once before they grow out of it, then yes ,I would say it can soon end up with you spending quite a bit of money. It all adds up you know!

We don't take the kids with us and it costs areound £5 - £6 be a seller at the ones near us. If you make £70, what's £6 and a few quid on petrol? You also save money buy buying new clothes for next to nothing. It's no hassle at all, especially if all your selling is clothes, just spread them out on a table and away you go!

I like my brand name stuff, I've often been called a 'label snob' many times before.
I wouldn't be seen dead in Asda/Matalan stuff myself.
But applying that same mentalilty to kids' clothes would just be extra stupid.

I do hope your not calling me stupid.

We don't buy all designer gear, but we do get bought presents that are more expensive items and occasionally buy a nice dress or coat from Next or somewhere. We buy stuff from Tesco, Primark, Asda, etc as well. You just buy what you like and what you can afford. I can't stand label snobs personally.

So you've to rope in child care now?
Surely you can see it's a bit of a self-defeating argument you've got going?

You should try an experiment.
Stop buying dear stuff with the reasoning that you'll 'always get a few quid for it from a carboot sale'.
That's a vicious circle.
Spend less in the first place, then stop caring about having to get money back on it.
Hey presto, more time with your kids on a Sunday.

Why don't you try selling some of them on here first, got stuff that'll fit a 2 year old girl (who's on the small side) in that lot? Upto you what you do with the money, could give that to charity after the postage...

Adults, no problem with it all.
Adults are able to appreciate the quality and longevity of better quality products.
Kids can't, they don't care.
So anyone buying designer clothes for their kids is just applying adult logic to children, which is mental.
Like adults who dress their kids in their favourite team's football colours.
They should be shot.

To the OP

If you want the money then car boot is a better way to get rid of the clothes rather than e-bay but don't expect people to pay big money

If you're not then give to a worthy charity (not the flyers through the door)

I guess it comes down to the individuals finances.

If you can afford it why not.

What makes me laugh are those that buy things just for the name.

Not everything that is designer is good quality.

I also find it funny when some people think it makes them "better" by wearing designer.

I remember people round my way used to wear prada trainers, they used to think it was saying something.

It's prada sport!!!

That's the bottom end stuff.

And at around only £150 for a pair it really doesn't put you above anyone else.

Some just wear for the name, it has to be in your face and tacky.

To be fair when I was younger (I ain't old now ) I used to wear evisu, it was in your face and it was all about that kinda thing with my mates.

Now though I won't buy things with the name plastered, I find it tacky.

Subtlety is the key.

Why spend £40 on a kids' jacket, when it's just going to end up sliding down a grassy bank at school and be too small in three months?
Daft daft daft.
Spend £8 on one, then relax in the knowledge you can bin it.
This will, of course, all change once the kids become old enough to know they're wearing cheap stuff...

I see your point and at the end of the day you make sense.

But again if say someone has large amounts of money £40 is nothing.

So that's kinda like what I meant, it's all comes down to the individual, and their perogative.

Whether you spend x amount or y amount it doesn't make you any better (not saying you said it did, just a general comment)

One thing I do find silly is if you don't have it and you still buy the more expensive stuff, some people go for expensive trainers, and these are people that have no money but the little they have is wasted on trainers that toddlers are going to grow out of.

That's another interesting point.
I believe these people are just living out their own dreams via their kids.
They can't afford the adult designer gear, but the kids' stuff is more accessable.
Hey presto, the kids just become mini-versions of what they'd like to be.
